IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0Current Year Facts and Circumstances: Every Child a Reader is a 501(c)(3) childrens literacy charity founded in 1993 to provide teachers, public librarians, caregivers, and parents across America the tools and resources to give to children and teens to improve their reading skills and enjoyment. Our focus is on family, diversity, and a national reach into all 50 states. We have also just begun a free childrens book donation program to small town and inner city shelters, schools, and community centers in need.By creating reading lists to serve a wide range of interests and reading levels, as well as word activity pages and free posters created by childrens book artists, Every Child a Reader is a year-round resource for educators and parents. We are also the organizers of Childrens Book Week, the longest-running book week celebration in America, founded in 1919. During this week, over 700 school and libraries host reading hour and activity events for families using materials weve created, and weve organized our first book donation campaign to undeserved children. Additionally, Every Child a Reader runs the National Ambassador for Young Peoples Literature program with the Library of Congress, chosen every other year for a two-year term by an independent panel of literacy professionals. We also partner with the following organizations to spread the word about the joy and lifelong value of reading to children and teens: the Library of Congress, Sesame Street, Little Free Libraries, Screen-Free Week, the International Literacy Association, We Need Diverse Books, and more. We run our programs with just a staff of five who do all the poster and resources mailings to school and libraries, with the in-kind support of artists who create materials for the kids.Every Child a Reader Fundraising: Every Child a Reader maintains an ongoing fundraising program via the selling of vintage Childrens Book Week posters; small grants from specialized donors in the literacy world; participation in employee matching programs or giving days at American Express, Chase Bank, PayPal, and Amazon Smile; and personal fundraising appeals. We do not spend any money on mailing or mailing lists. In lieu of a time-intensive, low ROI annual fundraising gala, we have launched a successful childrens art silent auction with donated original art in conjunction with a free expression charity. The board of directors consists of literacy, business, and charity professionals; three additional members will be named in 2018:Jacqueline Grace, VP of Partnerships, Girl Scouts of AmericaCarol Fitzgerald, CEO of BookReporter.com and TeenReads, the leading online resource for teen and adult book groupsSimon Boughton, Publisher of Roaring Brook Press and founder of the National Ambassador for Young Peoples Literature ProgramJon Scieszka, award-winning author and illustrator and the first National Ambassador (2008-2009)Judith Haut, Senior VP and Associate Publisher, Random House Childrens Books Josely Moran, previous board director and childrens book buyer at Barnes & Noble
