Mission and Program Overview
Mission
Founded in 1989, hiv law project fights for the rights of the most underserved people living with hiv and aids. Hiv law project believes that all people deserve the same rights, including the right to live with dignity and respect, the right to be treated as equal members of society and the right to have their basic human needs fulfilled. These fundamental rights are often elusive for many people living with hiv/aids. Through innovative legal and advocacy programs, hiv law project partners with clients to fight for those rights.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- Hiv law project's public policy work is directed at eradicating the underlying problems facing low-income people living with hiv/aids locally and across the country. Based on insights and information gained through individual legal cases and hiv law project's center for women and hiv advocacy, hiv law project selects policy issues to address. The work is primarily aimed at shifting public perception, shaping meaningful polices, and holding policymakers accountable to traditionally underrepresented hiv-affected populations. Program highlights include expanding the definition of aids to benefit women and people of color, overcoming barriers to women's access to aids clinical trials, monitoring hiv reporting and partner notification trends, preserving right to give written, informed consent to hiv testing, preventing or ameliorating harsh mandatory testing programs for pregnant women and/or their newborns, advancing the grassroots campaign for comprehensive sexuality education and preserving funding for hiv-related legal services for low income people.
