Mission and Program Overview

Mission

During the 2015-2016 school year, read ahead served 866 k-5 students across 20 schools in brooklyn, queens, manhattan and jersey city who were mentored by 1,296 volunteer mentors from 43 corporate and community partner organizations. The majority of students in our partner schools qualified for free or reduced-price lunch. Students grow in their confidence and love of reading through the trusting relationships developed over 14,150 hours of reading and conversation.

Read ahead ignites a love of reading in young students through mentoring, improving their confidence as well as their odds for success in school and life.

IRS990/Desc0DURING THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR, READ AHEAD SERVED 927 STUDENTS ACROSS 22 SCHOOLS IN BROOKLYN, QUEENS, MANHATTAN, AND JERSEY CITY WITH THE SUPPORT OF 1,214 VOLUNTEER READING MENTORS FROM 43 CORPORATE AND COMMUNITY PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS. TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS DEVELOPED THROUGH THE TIME, BOOKS, LEARNING, AND CONVERSATIONS READ AHEAD MENTORS AND STUDENTS SHARED EACH WEEK. STUDENTS GREW IN THEIR CONFIDENCE AND LOVE OF READING THROUGH THE OVER 15,000 HOURS SPENT IN SESSIONS OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR. THROUGH OUR YEAR-END SURVEY, WE LEARNED THAT 87% OF TEACHERS AGREE THAT THERE HAD BEEN AN IMPROVEMENT IN THEIR STUDENTS' READING ABILITY AND 76% OF TEACHERS AGREE THAT THE STUDENTS' CONFIDENCE WHEN READING ALOUD HAD INCREASED. ADDITIONALLY, 95% OF VOLUNTEERS AGREED THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO BUILD A MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR STUDENT. THE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN READ AHEAD QUALIFY FOR FREE OR REDUCED-PRICED LUNCH. IN A RECENT LONGITUDINAL STUDY BY DUKE UNIVERSITY, RESEARCHERS FOUND THAT FOCUSING ON SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS WITH CHILDREN BETWEEN AGES 6 AND 11 HAD MORE IMPACT ON A STUDENT'S LIFE OUTCOMES THAN THE HARD ACADEMIC SKILLS BEING STUDIED. THESE SKILLS ARE DEVELOPED IN CHILDREN THROUGH THEIR OBSERVATION OF ADULTS WHO DEMONSTRATE THESE BEHAVIORS, PARTICULARLY ADULTS WITH WHOM THEY HAVE TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS SUCH AS MENTORS. READ AHEAD'S SIGNATURE PROGRAM FACILITATED THIS TYPE OF DEVELOPMENT WITH 927 STUDENTS THIS PAST YEAR THROUGH HOSTING OVER 15,000 LUNCH HOURS OF PROGRAMMING DURING WHICH STUDENT-MENTOR PAIRS SPENT TIME TOGETHER READING AND BUILDING THEIR RELATIONSHIPS IN WEEKLY READING-BASED MENTORING SESSIONS. READ AHEAD PRIMARILY RECRUITED STUDENTS WHO ARE: 1) READING BELOW GRADE LEVEL, 2) ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS OR WHO DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH AT HOME, 3) APT TO PARTICULARLY BENEFIT FROM ONE-ON-ONE ATTENTION FROM AN ADULT MENTOR. A SIGNIFICANT PROPORTION OF READ AHEAD STUDENTS AND MENTORS CONTINUED THEIR RELATIONSHIPS FROM PRIOR SCHOOL YEARS; MANY MENTORS AND STUDENTS WORK TOGETHER FOR SEVERAL YEARS AS THE STUDENTS PROGRESS THROUGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL UNTIL THEY GRADUATE AND GO TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, WHICH HAS AN EVEN GREATER IMPACT ON STUDENTS' PROGRESS.ADDITIONALLY, READ AHEAD WAS AWARDED AND BEGAN WORKING ON THE INITIAL STAGES OF A TAPROOT FOUNDATION PROGRAM MEASUREMENT SERVICE GRANT WHICH WILL DELIVER A SET OF KEY PROGRAM METRICS. THIS PROCESS BEGAN IN THE LATE MONTHS OF THE FISCAL YEAR AND WILL CONTINUE INTO FY 16. READ AHEAD IS WORKING WITH A TEAM OF PRO BONO STRATEGY CONSULTANTS TO IDENTIFY THE MOST IMPORTANT METRICS OF PROGRAM EFFECTIVENESS AND DEVELOP A SYSTEM TO TRACK AND MONITOR THOSE METRICS. THE TAPROOT FOUNDATION, A NATIONAL NONPROFIT, CONNECTS NONPROFITS AND SOCIAL CHANGE ORGANIZATIONS WITH SKILLED VOLUNTEERS THROUGH PRO BONO SERVICE. SINCE 2001, TAPROOT'S SKILLED VOLUNTEERS HAVE SERVED 3,300 SOCIAL CHANGE ORGANIZATIONS REPRESENTING 1.5 MILLION HOURS OF WORK WORTH OVER $141 MILLION IN VALUE. TAPROOT IS LOCATED IN NEW YORK, SAN FRANCISCO, CHICAGO, LOS ANGELES AND WASHINGTON, D.C. THE SERVICE GRANT PROGRAM, TAPROOT'S FLAGSHIP PROGRAM, INVOLVES IN-DEPTH ENGAGEMENTS BETWEEN PRO BONO CONSULTING TEAMS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. EACH PROJECT RESULTS IN A FINAL INFRASTRUCTURE-BUILDING DELIVERABLE IN THE AREAS OF MARKETING, STRATEGY MANAGEMENT, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & HR OR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY.IN THE SPIRIT OF OUTCOMES MEASUREMENT, READ AHEAD IMPLEMENTED TOOLS TO INCREASE DATA COLLECTION AND INFORMATION GATHERING ABOUT ALL STUDENTS AND MENTORS. THIS ALLOWED US TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING OF IMPACT AND ENHANCED OUR ABILITY TO MAKE STUDENT-MENTOR MATCHES BASED ON SIMILARITIES IN DEMOGRAPHICS, INTERESTS, AND BACKGROUNDS. THESE EFFORTS PROVED TO BE VERY SUCCESSFUL, AS 95% OF VOLUNTEER MENTORS SURVEYED SAID THEY WOULD RECOMMEND READ AHEAD TO A POTENTIAL PARTNER ORGANIZATION OR FRIEND. READ AHEAD IS NOT ONLY COMMITTED TO DEVELOPING STUDENTS, BUT ALSO VOLUNTEERS. THIS YEAR, THE STAFF DEVELOPED AND DELIVE
