In 2001, mmdg opened the mark morris dance center in brooklyn, ny, the company's first permanent home in the u.s., housing rehearsal space for the dance community, outreach programs for local residents, and a school offering dance classes to students of all ages. The school at the mark morris dance center is the centerpiece of mmdg's education programing. The school serves over 1,800 children and teens through high-quality dance instruction accompanied by live music. Over 4,800 adult students of all levels are offered over 35 different affordable weekly drop-in classes and workshops in a diverse array of genres. Mmdg rents out its seven dance studios for over 6,000 hours per year to nonprofit dance companies and solo-artists at deeply-reduced rates through the subsidized studio rental program. Since 2001, over 600 companies and choreographers have used mmdg's state-of-the-art studios, each supplied with wood-sprung floors, ballet barres, full wall mirrors, natural light, pianos and sound systems.

Mmdg is committed to providing free and low-cost dance and music opportunities for the community and its brooklyn neighbors through education and community based programs including: the mmdg/nycha partnership (offering free dance classes to youth and senior residents of brooklyn public housing), the mark morris dance, music & literacy project (a free 10-week arts education program conducted with brooklyn public schools), and the dance for pd program for more than 400 people with parkinson's and their caregivers) in 5 locations throughout nyc.in cooperation with the new york city housing authority, the mmdg/nycha partnership provides free weekly dance classes to youth and senior residents of brooklyn public housing with the goal of increasing their interest and comfort with the arts. The mark morris dance, music & literacy project is a 10-week free arts education program conducted with brooklyn public schools that introduces modern dance and music to 900 students each year through mark morris' l'allegro, il penseroso ed il moderato. Over the course of a ten week in-school residency, mmdg teaching artists and musicians guide classes designed to build children's comfort and familiarity with the arts and teach them the fundamentals of dance and music. The program culminates in a visit to the dance center for a private performance and conversation between the children and mmdg dancers. Dance for pd (a partnership with brooklyn parkinson group) provides free weekly dance and music workshops in 5 locations throughout nyc for parkinson's patients and their caregivers. The program supports people with pd and their families through social interaction and arts-based physical activities. Mmdg also gives training workshops (for teachers, doctors, therapists, etc.) which have led to similar programs implemented in more than 100 communities in 11 countries.
