WE ALSO HAVE 1ST MONDAYS, A READING SERIES FOR WORK THAT IS FURTHER ALONG IN ITS DEVELOPMENT; AND 3T WRITING WORKSHOPS, WHICH PROVIDE CREATIVE WRITING CLASSES TO PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY, CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE, AND YOUNG ADULTS FACING INCARCERATION, ALLOWING THEM TO SEE THEIR WRITTEN WORK BROUGHT TO LIFE BY PROFESSIONAL ACTORS. TOGETHER, OUR CURRENT ROSTER OF PROGRAMS CONTINUES NAKED ANGELS' STRONG LEGACY OF SUPPORTING WRITERS FROM ALL BACKGROUNDS, DEVELOPING NEW WORK THAT REFLECTS DIVERSE EXPERIENCES AND SECURES THE LONG-TERM VITALITY OF THE ARTS IN NEW YORK WITH YOUTH OUTREACH. THROUGH WRITING AND THEATER WE ARE STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES AND BUILDING SOCIAL CAPITAL BY UPENDING THE LONG STANDING ISSUE OF PRIVILEGE IN THE ARTS, ESPECIALLY IN THE THEATER. TUESDAYS@9 NOW OPERATES IN LOS ANGELES, MIAMI, AND CHICAGO AS WELL AS NEW YORK CITY. EACH OUTPOST MEETS NEARLY EVERY TUESDAY EVENING FOR NINE MONTHS OF THE YEAR. IN NYC, ATTENDANCE IS BETWEEN 120-150 PEOPLE EACH NIGHT AT THEATER 80 ON ST MARKS PLACE. MIAMI TUESDAYS REGULARLY SEE BETWEEN 50-60 ATTENDEES A NIGHT AT FILMGATE INTERACTIVE. LOS ANGELES ALSO BRINGS IN ABOUT 50 PEOPLE EACH NIGHT AT THYMELE ARTS. CHICAGO HAS A LIMIT OF 45 PEOPLE AT THE ANNOYANCE THEATER AND IS ALWAYS FULL.MANY OF OUR WRITERS AND ACTORS HAVE ACHIEVED PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS THROUGH THEIR READINGS AT TUESDAYS@9, INCLUDING WRITERS DEAN IMPERIAL (NETFLIX'S "IMPOSTERS AND 2018 NY TELEVISION FESTIVAL AWARD WINNER, "HAMMERHEAD"), JACKIE REINGOLD ("LAW AND ORDER," "IN TREATMENT, AND "GRACE AND FRANKIE"), FRANK PUGLIESE ("HOUSE OF CARDS"), MATT HOVERMAN ("SOPHIA, THE FIRST AND "ARTHUR"), HALLEY FEIFFER, TESSA BORBRIDGE, JANE ELIAS, AMY STAATS, GWYN MCALLISTER, TO NAME A FEW, HAVE ALL SEEN PRODUCTIONS OFF-BROADWAY.WHILE THE POSSIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE IS A STRONG DRAW, IT IS THE THE VIBRANT, SUPPORTIVE, AND WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE THAT BRINGS PEOPLE BACK WEEK AFTER WEEK. STUDIES SHOW (SEE NPR "LONELINESS IN AMERICA") THE DELETERIOUS EFFECTS OF SOCIAL ISOLATION ON INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIETY, AND THE CHARACTERIZATION OF ITS PARTICULAR IMPACT ON ARTISTS THROUGHOUT HISTORY IS ALL TOO FAMILIAR. TUESDAYS@9 HAS PROVEN TO BE AN ANTIDOTE. WE RECEIVE BEAMING FEEDBACK FROM ACTORS AND WRITERS, WITH THE MOST COMMON BEING, "TUESDAYS@9 CHANGED MY LIFE." AS A TESTAMENT TO THE EVENT'S POPULARITY, THREE ADDITIONAL CHAPTERS OF TUESDAYS@9 HAVE OPENED IN LOS ANGELES (SINCE 2004) AND MIAMI (SINCE FEBRUARY 2018). OUR NEWEST CHAPTER, CHICAGO TUESDAYS, OPENED AT THE ANNOYANCE THEATER IN A 45 SEAT VENUE ON SEPTEMBER 4, 2018. 1ST MONDAYS HAD A READING OF A SCREENPLAY BY JACQUELINE CHRISTY, THE FILM, MAGIC HOUR, IS CURRENTLY IN POST PRODUCTION. A PLAY BY GWYNN MCALLISTER, PASSIONATA, WAS ALSO READ IN THE SPRING OF 2018, BOTH AT ACCESS THEATER. PASSIONATA WENT ON TO HAVE AN ACCLAIMED RUN AT THE MARTHA'S VINEYARD PLAYHOUSE. 1ST MONDAYS IS A PLACE FOR PLAYS AND SCREENPLAYS DEVELOPED AT TUESDAYS@9. ONCE SELECTED, COMPLETED WORKS ARE PROVIDED A SPACE, DIRECTOR, CAST, AND BRIEF REHEARSAL PERIOD. AN ADDITIONAL TEN PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ATTENDED OUR 2018 3T SUMMER STYLE PROGRAM, WHERE, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF WORKING FILMMAKERS, THE YOUNG WRITERS WROTE, DIRECTED, SHOT, AND EDITED FILMS THE FIRST WEEK AND WROTE PLAYS IN THE SECOND WEEK. THE SESSION CULMINATED IN AN INSPIRING EVENING OF THEATER AND SCREENING OF THEIR FILMS. THESE FOUR REMARKABLE FILMS CAN BE VIEWED ON OUR WEBSITE, NAKEDANGELS.COM.THIS YEAR, WE WERE ABLE TO FURTHER EXPAND INTO THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM. IN EARLY 2017, WE BEGAN A PARTNERSHIP WITH CULTURE FOR ONE, AN ORGANIZATION WHICH BRINGS THE ARTS TO CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE. CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE ARE AMONG THE MOST AT RISK CHILDREN IN NEW YORK CITY, AND THE MAJORITY OF THESE CHILDREN ARE AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO COME FROM HOUSEHOLDS THAT ARE HISTORICALLY UNDERPRIVILEGED. BECAUSE OF THE TRANSITORY NATURE OF CHILDREN LIVING IN INSTITUTIONAL FOSTER CARE, WE WERE TASKED WITH CREATING A WORKSHOP THAT COULD BE DONE IN LESS THAN THREE HOURS. WE FOUND THIS WORKSHOP TO BE JUST AS EFFECTIVE AND PROFOUND. OUR WORKSHOPS HELP BUILD THE STUDENTS' CONFIDENCE IN THEIR WRITING. WE ENCOURAGE THEM TO REALIZE THEIR STORY IS THEIR STRENGTH.IN 2017-2018, WE PROVIDED FOURTEEN WORKSHOPS AND REACHED 135 CHILDREN. WE BROUGHT SIX 3T WORKSHOPS TO ADOLESCENT GIRLS LIVING AT THE EUPHRASIAN RESIDENCE WHO ATTEND THE RESTART ACADEMY ON EAST 17TH STREET IN MANHATTAN. THESE YOUNG WOMEN, AGES 13-18, HAVE EXPERIENCED PROFOUND TRAUMA WHICH QUALIFIED THEM FOR THE THERAPEUTIC SETTING AT EUPHRASIAN. IRIS GRUBER, THE GUIDANCE COUNSELOR AT RESTART ACADEMY, HAD THIS TO SAY AFTER ONE OF OUR WORKSHOPS: "THE GIRLS HAD THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME WRITING THEIR PLAYS. YOU AND YOUR TEAM KEPT THE GIRLS ENGAGED AND TOTALLY IMMERSED IN THEIR WRITING! PLUS THE SAFE ENVIRONMENT AND RESPECT TO THEIR WORK AND INDIVIDUALITY MADE THEM FEEL SAFE AND VALIDATED."WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE TWO WORKSHOPS TO THE FORESTDALE HOLLIS MENTORING SERVICE IN QUEENS, OFFERING A CREATIVE OUTLET TO THEIR 13-TO-18-YEARS-OLD PARTICIPANTS, HALF OF WHOM ARE FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND HALF FROM THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM. WE WERE ABLE TO GO TO ANOTHER CENTER TREATING CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE, ABBOTT HOUSE IN IRVINGTON, NY. THIS WAS EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL AND WE HOPE TO GO BACK IN THE COMING YEAR. NAKED ANGELS TRAVELED TWICE TO THE JCAA PLEASANTVILLE COTTAGE SCHOOL IN WESTCHESTER, NY, WHERE WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO OFFER OUR FREE 3T WRITING WORKSHOPS TO CHILDREN WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES AND FOSTER CARE SITUATIONS. SABRINA CRIMMINS, A SOCIAL WORKER FROM OUTREACH HOUSE RIDGEWOOD WAS IMPRESSED WHEN SHE SAW ONE OF OUR WORKSHOPS AND ASKED US TO BRING 3T TO THIS ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL FOR YOUNG ADULTS FACING INCARCERATION. WE WERE ABLE TO GO TWICE AND FOUND THESE EXPERIENCES TO BE AMAZINGLY SUCCESSFUL. MS. CRIMMIN'S WRITES, ""OUTREACH HOUSE, IN COLLABORATION WITH RESTART ACADEMY, A DISTRICT 79 NYC DOE SCHOOL PROGRAM, SERVE STUDENTS FROM ALL 5 BOROUGHS WHO STRUGGLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH, SUBSTANCE USE, AND BEHAVIORAL MANAGEMENT ISSUES. OUR RESIDENTS/STUDENTS ARE OFTEN "OVER-AGED AND UNDER-CREDITED AND SOME HAVE MISSED YEARS OF INSTRUCTION DUE TO LIFE CIRCUMSTANCE. MOST STRUGGLE WITH SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT AND READING/WRITING COMPREHENSION. AS THE SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER HERE, I FRANKLY HAVE NEVER SEEN MY STUDENTS LIGHT UP AND ENGAGE AS MUCH IN WRITING AS WHEN THE NAKED ANGELS 3T WRITING WORKSHOP VISITED OUR SITE. STUDENTS WERE ENGAGING WITH PROFESSIONAL ACTORS, WRITING FEVERISHLY, OPENING UP, TAKING ACADEMIC RISKS, AND FILLING PAGES AND PAGES OF LOOSE-LEAF. TOGETHER, OUR CURRENT ROSTER OF PROGRAMS CONTINUES NAKED ANGELS' STRONG LEGACY OF SUPPORTING WRITERS FROM ALL BACKGROUNDS, DEVELOPING NEW WORK THAT REFLECTS DIVERSE EXPERIENCES AND SECURES THE LONG-TERM VITALITY OF THE ARTS IN NEW YORK WITH YOUTH OUTREACH. THROUGH WRITING AND THEATER WE ARE STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES AND BUILDING SOCIAL CAPITAL BY UPENDING THE LONG STANDING ISSUE OF PRIVILEGE IN THE ARTS, ESPECIALLY IN THE THEATER. TUESDAYS@9 NOW OPERATES IN LOS ANGELES, MIAMI, AND CHICAGO AS WELL AS NEW YORK CITY. EACH OUTPOST MEETS NEARLY EVERY TUESDAY EVENING FOR NINE MONTHS OF THE YEAR. IN NYC, ATTENDANCE IS BETWEEN 120-150 PEOPLE EACH NIGHT AT THEATER 80 ON ST MARKS PLACE. MIAMI TUESDAYS REGULARLY SEE BETWEEN 50-60 ATTENDEES A NIGHT AT FILMGATE INTERACTIVE. LOS ANGELES ALSO BRINGS IN ABOUT 50 PEOPLE EACH NIGHT AT THYMELE ARTS. A PLAY BY GWYNN MCALLISTER, PASSIONATA, WAS ALSO READ IN THE SPRING OF 2018, BOTH AT ACCESS THEATER. PASSIONATA WENT ON TO HAVE AN ACCLAIMED RUN AT THE MARTHA'S VINEYARD PLAYHOUSE. 1ST MONDAYS IS A PLACE FOR PLAYS AND SCREENPLAYS DEVELOPED AT TUESDAYS@9. ONCE SELECTED, COMPLETED WORKS ARE PROVIDED A SPACE, DIRECTOR, CAST, AND BRIEF REHEARSAL PERIOD.
