Activity 2

COOKE CENTER INSTITUTE - Schools in some of the poorest neighborhoods in NYC contract with Cooke because they want to better meet the needs of all their students. Cooke sends teachers into parochial and charter schools where they work on-site one or two days per week throughout the school year. The most popular consultations are those around differentiated instruction and the teaching of reading and writing. Schools working with Cooke consultants consistently give them the highest ratings while reporting that they have made significant changes in their teaching practice. Another Institute program, Cooke Learning Centers, provide direct services to students in general education partner schools who are at least 1.5 years behind academically and who are identified with classified learning disabilities.

Activity 3

COOKE CENTER PRESCHOOL - Cooke teachers and therapists provide special education services to preschoolers with classified disabilities in dozens of sites around the city. In addition, Cooke operates two inclusive preschool classrooms at West Harlem Head Start. The Collaboration for Inclusion program prepares preschoolers in other Head Start centers to be Kindergarten-ready. Cooke identifies children who are exhibiting signs of learning, language or social delays, and provides short-term intervention services. In most cases, these services suffice to bring children back on track with their typically developing peers before they enter the public school system. In addition to direct services, Cooke teachers also support parents and provide extensive teacher training.
