Activity 2

Community food program:volunteers work as a team every friday to cook a meal from scratch for 75-100 homeless and low-income guests. Our soup kitchen at the broadway presbyterian church on 114th street and broadway is unique for its family-style serving and inviting environment. Volunteer commitment of 2-3 hours. No cooking skills required. Also volunteers work with homeless and low-income clients at neighborhood churches, pantries, and other community venues. Volunteers act as advocates by providing clients with referrals to shelters, pantries, treatment facilities, and job training programs and by helping clients to become aware of government benefit systems. Volunteer commitment of 2-3 hours, once a week, m-f, day/evening hours, various locations. Also programs provide community donated food packs, clothing, and household items for low-income and homeless individuals, families, the elderly, and for people living with hiv/aids. M & th. 2-3 hrs.

Activity 3

Leadership and youth programs:after-hours tutoring volunteers engage elementary school children from the volunteers of america family residence at 104th and broadway in a range of disciplines, including reading, math, and test preparation. Volunteer commitment of 2 hours/week. M-w afternoons, off-campus. America reads is part of a national campaign calling on all americans to help every child read at grade level. Volunteers and work-study students engage elementary school students in a variety of activities, from field trips to homework help, that enhance their basic literary skills and inspire enthusiasm for learning and reading. Volunteer commitment of 4-10 hours/week. M-f afternoons at after-school sites & mornings as teacher's aides. Asian youth program (ayp) , in collaboration with a shelter for women and children displaced by domestic violence, brings student mentors together with a group of affected asian youth. Volunteers meet with their mentees weekly, developing one-to-one relationships as they participate in engaging projects on campus and throughout nyc. All activities are designed to build childrens self-confidence, foster a sense of family and community, and inspire a commitment to service. Volunteer commitment of 4 hrs. Big sibs one of ci's oldest programs, focuses on developing regular and positive interaction between a child and a caring, stable, friend and mentor. Volunteers undergo a screening process and must make a minimum 2-year commitment to spend 3-4 hours a week with their little brother/sister and attend monthly workshops. Various days, daytime, off-campus. Columbia youth adventurers provides field trips for children ages 5-12 from morningside heights and harlem to cultural and recreational sites around the city. The volunteer commitment is 5 hours a week, on saturdays from around 10:30 am until 3:30 pm. Heights to heights mentoring matches bilingual middle-school students with individual mentors who incorporate tutoring and creative activities to engage the students in education and cultural enrichment. Volunteer commitment of 3-5 hours on campus.
