Activity 2

At the Maccabi games in August 2012, Jewish athletes, aged 13 16, come from the United States, Israel, South America, Canada and Europe to test their skills in a variety of sports. The Maccabi games, however, serve a purpose far beyond athletic competition and sightseeing. The games promote community involvement, teamwork and pride in being Jewish. Team sports generally offered are baseball, boys basketball, boys soccer, girls basketball, girls soccer and girls softball. Individual sports generally available include bowling, dance, golf, swimming, table tennis and tennis.

Kids SportsThis program has the largest number of participants of any offered by the JCC, with approximately 700 children participating in basketball alone. The size of the program requires the use of many fields and gyms around the county. A typical year includes participation in boys flag football, mini soccer, soccer, basketball, mini basketball, pre-k soccer, mini baseball, and tee ball. SeniorsOver 1,200 Rockland County seniors enjoy a variety of trips, educational events, lectures, clubs, dance instruction and other activities in a congenial environment. Cultural ArtsAn annual Cultural Arts Festival featuring films, authors, and other Jewish Art and Cultural programs. Also the Rockland County Jewish Film Festival which is a month long period in which we feature various Jewish themed movies screened throughout the county.Day CampApproximately 50 campers, for grades K through 6, enjoy one or two sessions of structured camp activities each summer at the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds in Pearl River, NY. Certified supervisors insure a safe, enjoyable and educational environment for our campers.Parenting Many classes are offered to parents and their young children. Examples include music, art, dance, cooking, and concert series. Pre-K campThis is a popular program offered during the summer months for approximately 50 children.TeensThe major component of this program is Mitzvah Makers/Mitzvah Day. Mitzvah is the Hebrew word for commandment. It has come to mean a good deed. The Mitzvah Makers visiting with holocaust survivors, adults with special needs and runs our internet radio show, "Jake Talks". Nearly 500 teens, 11 - 17, participate in Mitzvah Day, performing community service projects to help people in need.
