Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The treasurer and executive director review the 990 and then present it to the finance committee of the board for review. The finance committee approves the 990 before it is submitted to the irs. When donor anonymity is requested, donors' names are redacted before presentation to the finance committee and board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The policy covers any director, officer or staff member, or said person's immediate family, or any party, group or organization to which said person has allegiance, may be seen as competing with the interests or concerns of danspace project, inc. Determinations and reviews are made at the level of the board. When a director has an interest in a transaction being considered by the board, the director discloses the conflict to the board before the board takes action on the matter. The board member in potential conflict of interest situations may participate in the information-gathering stage of the board's discussion. However, the person having a conflict retires from the room in which the board is meeting and shall not participate in the final deliberations, decision or vote regarding the matter under consideration. The policy is annually reviewed and re-adopted.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

In 2007, a board selection committee was formed to conduct an executive director search and worked with an outside consulting firm to establish compensation for the position. The executive director (ed) of danspace project receives an annual review, including a performance and salary review, conducted by the executive committee (ec) of danspace project's board of directors. Each year the executive committee assesses the ed's performance. In a three-step process the ec takes into account numerous factors including the organization's financial health. After such assessment and review with ed, ec determines whether the executive director's salary remains: 1) as is; 2) is increased by approximately 3% (standard of living increase); or 3) whether she receives a bonus but no salary increase.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PLATFORM SERIESA YEAR-LONG RESEARCH RESIDENCY, THAT CULMINATED IN A 2-WEEK MINI-PLATFORM, WAS LED BY PROGRAM DIRECTOR AND ASSOCIATE CURATOR LYDIA BELL AND GUEST ARTIST-CURATORS TATYANA TENENBAUM AND JASMINE HEARN (APRIL 25-MAY 2, 2019) AND ENTITLED "COLLECTIVE TERRAIN/S." THE PLATFORM LOOKED AT QUESTIONS OF SOUNDING IN THE BODY: HOW DOES THE BODY OPEN UP POSSIBILITIES FOR VOICE AND RESISTANCE? WHAT RESONANCES IN THE VOICE AND BODY EXIST BEYOND LANGUAGE? BELL, TENENBAUM AND HEARN WORKED WITH COLLABORATORS TO CREATE A "COLLECTIVE TERRAIN/S" CATALOGUE. IN TOTAL, "COLLECTIVE TERRAIN/S" HAD OVER 30 COLLABORATORS FROM WRITERS TO PERFORMERS. ACTIVITIES ALSO INCLUDED PERFORMANCES OF NEW COMMISSIONS FROM HEARN, TENENBAUM, SINHA, AND KUUMBA, AND A ONE-WEEK CREATIVE RESIDENCY AT DSP. IN ADDITION, THE DSP CURATORIAL TEAM BEGAN INTENSIVE PLANNING AND PREPARATION FOR THE UPCOMING PLATFORM 2020 WITH GUEST ARTIST-CURATOR OKWUI OKPOKWASILI, INCLUDING THE PRODUCTION OF AN ALBUM AND PUBLICATION TO BE RELEASED DURING THE PLATFORM. THE 2018-2019 SEASON ALSO SAW DSP'S REPRINT OF THE JUDSON NOW CATALOGUE AS WELL AS THE PLANNING AND PREPARATIONS FOR ANOTHER UPCOMING PUBLICATION MARKING DSP'S 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PLATFORMS PROGRAMS. FINALLY, IN MAY OF 2019, DSP WAS ALSO INVITED TO CO-ORGANIZE AND CO-HOST A SYMPOSIUM WITH PARTNERSHIP FOR SACRED SPACES AND PHILADELPHIA CONTEMPORARY AT OUR VENUE, ST. MARK'S CHURCH. THIS SYMPOSIUM WAS PART OF A SERIES IN PHILADELPHIA CALLED "GROUNDS THAT SHOUT!" THAT WAS BASED ON AN EARLIER PLATFORM THAT DSP PRESENTED, "DANCING PLATFORM PRAYING GROUNDS: BLACKNESS, CHURCHES, AND DOWNTOWN DANCE" WHICH WAS GUEST ARTIST-CURATED BY REGGIE WILSON.
