IRS990/Desc0Inspired by our mission to advance human rights and social justice, MADRE partners with community-based, women-led organizations in the Global South on the front-lines of war, climate breakdown and their aftermath. Through grant-making, organizational strengthening and legal advocacy, MADRE helps our partners meet urgent needs in communities and create lasting solutions to the crises of our time.Since our founding as an international women's rights organization in 1983, MADRE has distributed over $55 million in grants and in-kind support to our grassroots partners throughout the globe, and our grant-making budget continues to increase annually. We fund local organizations, networks and groups that are "under the radar" of other international funders and large aid organizations. We focus our partnerships on women-led organizations that prioritize the leadership of young women and girls, Indigenous women, Afro-descendant women, LGBTIQ people, and people with disabilities. We provide our partners with training and skills-building to effectively meet the self-identified needs of women and communities, and we work with them and with allies in our network of legal advocates to identify opportunities to change laws and policies that will help advance community priorities and build more just societies. In FY2019, we advanced this work through three core program areas: (1) Ending Gender Violence, to prevent that abuse and help survivors heal; (2) Advancing Climate Justice, to sustain women's vital interventions against climate crisis (3) Building a Just Peace, to sustain women's work to avert, resolve and build back from war.Our campaign, No Borders on Gender Justice, confronted the destructive agenda of the Trump Administration and other right-wing forces, generating proven alternatives that protect people and strengthen movements. We brought activists together across borders, sustain progressive social justice organizing and provide immediate protection to those most at risk. We also continued to operate our emergency and humanitarian relief programs, through which we mobilized urgent responses to catastrophe and delivered humanitarian aid to the communities of our grassroots sister organizations. Strategic Plan: 2018-2022At a moment in which we stand at a historical crossroads and need to imagine and realize a new global social contract, MADREs strategic plan offers a way forward. It lays out a path to our vision of a just, peaceful and sustainable world where all people enjoy the fullest range of human rights, where women and girls participate effectively in all aspects of society, and where people have a meaningful say in policies that affect their lives. Our work is oriented towards three core goals:Women at the Margins Lead: Through our work, women and girls who are excluded from power and representation in their societies gain capacities, resources and access to policymaking and other centers of power.Policies and Attitudes Change: We push for new policies at local, national and global levels to uphold women's rights. We will work to change attitudes and social norms to reflect the priorities of women at the margins.Progressive Movements Gain Power: We strengthen movements that are critical to advancing social change and seek opportunities for MADRE and our partners to play leadership roles in global movements.Recent Accomplishments: HighlightsEnding Gender Violence: MADRE helps survivors heal from abuse and become powerful advocates for every person's right to live free of violence. - In Iraq, we support the country's first network of shelters and safe houses to protect women and girls from violence, including sexual slavery, rape, forced marriage and other forms of abuse. - MADREs work in Syria meets the immediate needs of refugees, providing access to medical care, sexual and reproductive health workshops, human rights training and literacy courses. Advancing Climate Justice: MADRE amplifies the voices and solutions of women
