Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

Management reviewed a draft of the form 990 and provided edits to the tax preparer. After this process was performed, the form 990 was sent to the audit/finance committee and the full board of directors for review prior to being filed with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

The organization has a "board approved" conflicts of interest policy. Each board member must fill out an annual declaration stating they had no conflicts or identifying the nature of their interested party transactions.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management

The executive committee reviews comparable salaries and reviews the performance of the executive director to determine if the existing salary falls within these ranges. After a deliberation of this matter, a proposed salary is voted on.

IRS990/Desc0In 2015, MADRE continued work on two major initiatives: (1) Ending Rape as a Weapon of War, to prevent wartime rape and protect survivors, and (2) Women Climate Defenders, to sustain women's vital interventions against climate change. We also launched a new major initiative: (3) LGBTIQ Rights, joining together with our partners to defend against attacks based on gender and sexuality. Each of these initiatives reflects our dual approach of strengthening grassroots women's organizations while advocating for human rights. We continued to operate (4) emergency and humanitarian relief programs, through which we mobilized urgent responses to catastrophe and delivered over $1.2 million worth of humanitarian aid to the communities of our grassroots sister organizations. Highlights of accomplishments in these areas are below.(1) Initiative: Ending Rape as a Weapon of WarThrough this Initiative, MADRE confronts the use of rape as a weapon of war by setting up community-based services for care, counseling and shelter, and by demanding policy change to protect women and prevent rape.In Colombia, MADRE brought urgent care, healing art therapy and trauma counseling to former girl child soldiers and survivors of wartime sexual violence to help them rebuild their lives. In Iraq, we sheltered women and girls fleeing ISIS sexual slavery, providing urgent safety, medical care, counseling and healing.MADRE led an international advocacy effort to challenge the Iraqi government's ban on NGO-run women's shelters. This included bringing our Iraqi partner to testify on ISIS violence against women at the UN Security Council. Together, we demanded policy change on Iraq's shelter law to protect the increasing numbers of women and girls fleeing violence and sexual slavery in Iraq.In 2015, MADRE also facilitated the first in a series of solution-incubating sessions, bringing together Syrian and Iraqi women activists and leaders working to protect rape survivors and to document evidence of rape as a weapon of war. Together, we created recommendations to protect women from wartime rape, end the war and build lasting peace in communities, and advanced an advocacy strategy to push policymakers on these demands.(2) Initiative: Women Climate DefendersThrough this Initiative, we amplify the voices of women on the front-lines of our global climate crisis. MADREs grassroots partners confront poverty and discrimination that leave them especially vulnerable to climate threats like droughts and food shortages. With MADRE support, these women have innovated concrete strategies to protect local communities, and together, we advocate for policymakers to replicate and sustain grassroots women's solutions. In Kenya, frequent droughts devastate rural communities, leaving their land parched and threatening lives.
