IRS990/Desc0In 2018, MADRE advanced our work under our three core program areas: (1) Ending Gender Violence, to prevent that abuse and help survivors heal, (2) Advancing Climate Justice, to sustain women's vital interventions against climate change, and (3) Building a Just Peace, to sustain women's work to avert, resolve and build back from war.We also made new inroads in our campaign, No Borders on Gender Justice. Through this campaign, we bring activists together across borders, and we launch advocacy efforts to uncover and denounce violations and demand rights-based policies. We sustain the work of progressive social justice activists, and we provide immediate protection to those most at risk. Each of these areas of work is advanced by our core strategies: grant-making to local women's organizations, capacity-building to strengthen our partners and movements, and legal advocacy to demand rights-based policies. We also continued to operate our emergency and humanitarian relief programs, through which we mobilized urgent responses to catastrophe and delivered humanitarian aid to the communities of our grassroots sister organizations. Highlights of accomplishments in these areas are below.(1) Ending Gender ViolenceThrough our Ending Gender Violence program, we help survivors to heal from abuse and become powerful advocates for every person's right to a life free of violence. We build shelters and clinics, hold human rights trainings, mobilize in communities with our partners, and equip people with tools to prevent gender violence. We push for stronger human rights mechanisms to grapple with this global crisis and hold governments accountable to create and implement policies that tackle it. Highlights of that work include: In Iraq, we support our local partners to operate a network of shelters and safe houses to protect women and girls from gender violence, including sexual slavery, rape, trafficking, torture, honor killings, forced marriage and other forms of abuse. Our grants help mobilize legal assistance for women to access vital social services like health and education. With our support, our partners operate the only feminist radio station in Iraq, with broadcasts and call-in sessions that help challenge social norms that fuel gender violence.MADREs work in Syria meets the immediate needs of refugees and supports women and girls to advocate for their right to live free from violence and to become future leaders for peace and reconstruction in Syria.
