Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The oliver scholars program prepares high-achieving african-american and latino students for success at top independent schools and prestigious colleges. We provide crucial support for our scholars so that they can realize their full potential and ultimately give back to the city, the nation, and the world.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Admissions and recruitment - the program reaches out to public schools and community-based organizations throughout new york city to solicit nominations of students that actively pursue knowledge and demonstrate the potential for additional growth. Students and families receive guidance throughout the college admissions process.in 2012, we received five hundred thirteen(513) nominations from ninety five(95) middle schools and community based organizations across the five boroughs. Slightly more than half of these nominees were invited to attend one of ten open house events. Of those invited one hundred seventy(170) attended versus one hundred seventy three(173) the previous year. A total of fifty two(52) were admitted into the summer immersion program. Each year participants improve the scores on their secondary school assessment test(ssat) practice exams and demonstrate clear advances in the writing of their personal essays, as well as in their communication skills. Last year, 100% of scholars graduated and matriculated into college. Over time, 32% of scholars enrolled in ivy league institutions and 86% were admitted into schools rated in us news and world report's top colleges and universities in 2012.
Activity 3
Summer immersion program - this is a five(5) week, fulltime education enrichment course where students learn to become scholars. The internally designed curriculum helps them to develop academic, social, and leadership skills required to succeed in independent schools. This program is a two(2) year summer initiative: one between 7th and 8th grade and one between 8th and 9th grade as follows:summer immersion program i - serves rising eighth graders.summer immersion program ii - dedicated to those entering their freshman year of high school.

WE PROVIDE CRUCIAL SUPPORT FOR BOTH THE SCHOLARS AND THEIR FAMILIES TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES OF THIS TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY.THE OLIVER SCHOLARS PROGRAM STAFF SUPPORT STUDENTS' ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, AND PERSONAL PROGRESS THROUGHOUT THEIR HIGH SCHOOL CAREERS. THEY ARE ALSO MATCHED WITH ALUMNI AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS WHO OFFER THEIR GUIDANCE, FRIENDSHIP, AND SUPPORT AS MENTORS. SCHOLARS RECEIVE SCHOOL VISITS TWICE(2) ANNUALLY AND PARTICIPATE IN SPECIAL EVENTS FOCUSED ON COLLEGE AND CAREER, AS WELL AS LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT. JUNIORS AND SENIORS PARTICIPATE IN COLLEGE TOURS AND SEMINARS ALONG WITH SAT TEST PREPARATION. SCHOLARS ALSO COMPLETED SIX THOUSAND TWENTY-FIVE(6,025) HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE. SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE PROGRAM ALL OUR SENIORS HAVE GRADUATED AND WERE ADMITTED TO COLLEGES AND MATRICULATED WITH FINANCIAL AID PACKAGES.
