Mission and Program Overview

Major Activities

Activity 2
Clown carethe big apple circus clown care program, a community outreach program of the big apple circus, serves hospitialized children in 14 preeminent pediatric facilities nationwide. While clinical staff treat children's diseases, our nearly 65 clown care clown doctors partner with them to make fun and humor part of the standard of care. Using juggling, mime, magic, and music our clown doctors make more than 200,000 visits annually, working one to five days each week, year round."a child's natural need to laugh can get lost in the tangle of hospital procedures, technologies, and structures, " says michael christensen, co-founder of the big apple circus, who created the clown care program in 1986.professional doctors of delight conduct clown rounds, a parody of medical rounds where laughter is the chief medical treatment. Wearing white coats and assuming silly names, the clowns work in teams of two, with a supervising clown on each team. Masters of gentle parody, clown doctors can exaggerate intimidating medical jargon and procedures to humorous extremes, dissipating fear and anxiety in the process. In classical circus, under a big top tent, the ringmaster, as the authority figure, is the focus of parody; in the hospital, the doctors, rules, and procedures become the natural targets of loving irreverence. The clown doctors perform their own specialized procedures at bedsides, such as red nose transplants and kitty cat scans. Our goal is to empower hospitalized children, making them the bosses of the clowns, and encouraging them to direct the action.like their medical colleagues, clown doctors are highly skilled practitioners of their profession - funny business. Each member of clown care is a professional artist - not a volunteer - selected by intensive auditions for high-quality artistry and sensitivity. Clown care the provides the performers with training to prepare them to work in the hospitals, learning proper hygiene and hospital protocol. Medical staff at every host hospital recognize the value of the clown doctors. "the clown care program is an integral part of the healing process for children who come to the new york - presbyterian. The clown unit provides a unique way to reduce the stress associated with being in the hospital. Being able to bring a smile to the face of a sick child clearly complements the execellent care provided by our doctors and nurses. We are thrilled to include the clown care program as part of our team, said gerald m loughlin, md, pediatrician in chief at the new york-presbyterian phyllis and david komansky center for children's health.working in close partnership with the medical, nursing, and child life staff at every host hospital, clown care tailors its program to meet the need of each facility. Clown doctors visit children in pediatric services throughout the hospital. These include the inpatient areas, intensive care units, pre-and post-operative surgery, emergency rooms physical therapy, bone marrow transparent, pediatric aids, and outpatient and acute care clinics.currently clown care program operates in:atlanta, ga: children's healthcare of atlanta, scottish-rite children's hospital, egleston children's hospital, hughes spaldingbaltimore, md: john hopkins children's centerboston, ma: children's hospital of bostonchicago, il: la rabida children's hospitallivingston, nj: saint barnabas regional medical centermiami, fl: miami children's hospitalnew haven, ct: yale new haven children's hospitalnew york, ny: memorial sloan-kettering cancer center, harlem hospital, bronx lebanon hospital centerprovidence, ri: hasbro children's hospitalwashington, d.c.: children's national medical center in additon to its hospital programs, the big apple circus' vaudeville caravan program provides professional performers, dressed as iconic entertainment characters like a cowgirl or an elvis impersonator, to actively engage and empower elders in residential care facilities in chicago and new york. Activity 3
Beyond the ring/circus after schoolthe big apple circus offers a 12-week or 24-week instructional unit to approximately 30 school age students on site at a partner agency's facility, be it a community center or a school facility. The programs meet twice a week for two hours per session. Our students learn the basics of circus arts including juggling, acrobatics, and clowning. Each instructor is an experienced circus educator and can teach at least two skills. For the first few weeks, children are given an opportunity to learn and practice a variety of different skills. In a single 12-week unit, the instructors assess the children's range of skills half way through the session and begin planning a 30- minute show.circus after school is the only circus arts program in america that is directly run by a professional touring circus. As such, our students have the distinct opportunity of attending a live performance of the big apple circus, interacting with our professional performers, and taking advantage of other circus resources, such as customes, sets, and creative expertise. In addition, some of our students are occasionally invited to perform in the ring for special events.our circus after school program will engage children in a postive activity during the after school hours, providing a safe, supportive, and fun environment for children. Beyond the circus skills themselves, children will derive more universal, transferable educational benefits from the program.specifically, circus after school will:1. Encourage physical activity and improve endurance, balance and strength2. Teach the value of teamwork and the joy of celebrating each other's accomplishments3. Encourage setting ambitious goals for themselves and envisioning success.4. Demonstrate that through hard work and consistent practice, children can master new skills and accomplish their goals.5. Give children the opportunity to perform new skills for an audience.6. Through the discipline of juggling and other types of object manipulation, improve children's focus and concentrationmost importantly, we hope that circus after school will be a transformative educational experience for the children. We believe that the skills and experiences will translate into other areas of their lives postively affecting their self-control and self-esteem and thereby improving their ability to reach their long-term goals.

IRS990/MissionDescription0THE MISSION OF THE BIG APPLE CIRCUS IS TO INVIGORATE AUDIENCES WITH THE JOY AND WONDER OF CLASSICAL CIRCUS. AN ACCLAIMED SHOWCASE FOR PERFORMANCE TRADITIONS FROM CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD, THE BIG APPLE CIRCUS IS A DISTINCTLY NEW YORK INSTITUTION. EMBRACED BY GENERATIONS SINCE ITS FIRST PERFORMANCE IN LOWER MANHATTAN IN 1977, THE BIG APPLE CIRCUS LAUNCHED AN AMERICAN REVIVAL OF THE CLASSICAL CIRCUS. THE CIRCUS'S LOCATION IN NEW YORK IS PRECISELY THE REASON IT HAS FLOURISHED FOR OVER THREE DECADES, PERPETUATING AN INTERNATIONAL ART FORM IN ONE OF THE WORLD'S KEY URBAN CENTERS.
