Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of ncld is to improve the lives of the one in five children and adults nationwide with learning and attention issues by empowering parents and young adults, transforming schools, and advocating for equal rights and opportunities. We're working to create a society in which every individual possesses the academic, social, and emotional skills needed to succeed in school, at work, and in life. In 2021, ncld focused on supporting students, parents, and educators as they faced the challenges presented by covid; protecting the civil rights of students with disabilities during remote learning; and empowering young adults with learning and attention issues to serve as effective self-advocates.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Parent empowerment: ncld provides comprehensive information about learning and attention issues to parents. - in fy 2013, ncld's website for parents, ld.org, scaled its reach and engagement. Growing its audience more than 200% from the previous year, the organization was able to connect with millions of additional parents. The website features information about learning disabilities and adhd in easy-to-access formats such as articles, checklists and worksheets, informational toolkits and a changing menu of news items that address the challenges of ld throughout the year and across the lifespan. The site also offers a free online national/state resource locator, audio podcasts by experts, live online ld talk events, videos, an ld insights blog and interactive ld checklist, as well as a growing library of spanish-language materials. Ncld's electronic newsletters, serving both parents and educators, reach more than 150,000 subscribers annually up 200% from the prior year.- ncld hosts the getreadytoread.org website that provides resources on early learning and literacy to parents, early childhood educators and early care providers. In fy 2013, the site served more than 125,000 visitors.- in fy 2013 ncld launched ld navigator, a go-to resource for the pediatric professional community (pediatricians and nurse practitioners) around learning and attention issues. This easy-to-use, in depth resource for helping pediatric professionals give parents the best advice possible was launched in partnership with the american association of pediatrics (aap) and the national association of pediatric nurse practitioners (napnap).
Activity 3
Public policy and advocacy: ncld's public policy and advocacy program drives policy development and decision-making at the federal level. In fy 2013 ncld: - was the lead disability partner in a coalition that consists of the u.s. Chamber of commerce, civil rights groups and advocates for english language learners. The coalition conducted a campaign to speak out against senate and house elementary and secondary education act (esea) bills that did not protect students with ld and other at-risk students. - released a ground-breaking report called diplomas at risk, which examines the link between the type of high school diplomas and certificates that states offer and graduation outcomes for individuals with ld. Ncld hosted a briefing on the report on capitol hill and a webinar for parents around the nation to discuss its implications for their children and children in their states. - brought parent leaders to dc and made visits to members of congress and the senate and their staff to raise awareness of learning and attention issues, advocate stronger accountability in esea and better diploma options. As a result, we were able to secure language in both the republican and democratic draft workforce investment act reauthorization bills to support better transition planning for students leaving high school who need workforce training and increased access to literacy instruction and support.- developed comprehensive recommendations for the education sciences reform act, the legislation that sets the agenda and parameters for federal investment in education research. Ncld worked with the house and senate to include this language in the reauthorization bill. - developed, with experts from its professional advisory board and outside organizations, recommendations for including students with learning and attention issues in a personalized learning system called competency based education. These recommendations will be released in early 2014.
