Part III - Line 1

The studio museum in harlem is a contemporary art museum that focuses on the work of artists of african descent - as well as work that has been inspired and influenced by african culture - past and present; through its exhibitions, artist-in-residence programs, education and public programming, permanent collection and archival and research facilities. The studio museum in harlem is committed to serving as a unique resource to its local community, and to national and international arenas, by making art and exhibtions concrete and personal for each viewer. The museum provides a context within which to address contemporary and historical issues, presented through art, created by artists of african descent. The studio museum in harlem's purpose is: a) to present historical, contemporary and future trends in the work of african american artists and artists of african descent: to highlight their contributions to world art history, and to provide audiences with opportunities to explore the issues presented through the work of these artists. B) to develop a permanent collection that documents the contributions of african american artists and artists of african descent to world art history, and that reflects the context within which the museum functions. C) to offer african american artists and artists of african descent greater access to the national and international art world, specifically through the museum's exhibitions and artist-in-residence programs. D) to cultivate present and future audiences and supporters of the musuem through membership activities, which provide an awareness of the creative process, that bridges the gap between the studio experience and the museum visit. E) to provide interdisciplinary, multi-dimensional educational and public programs, which expand the concept of learning and enhance a sense of identity, self-esteem and self-knowledge of the studio museum in harlem's audiences.

Part III - Line 4A - Exhibitions

2018 saw the culmination of the fictions exhibit, a survey of recent work by 19 emerging artists of over 11,700 visitors. Maren hassinger: monuments, is a yearlong sculptural installation on display throughout marcus garvey park until june 10, 2019. Monuments african descent who live and work across the united states and the last exhibition to show before the building's close. In spring we launched our first public arts partnership with the schomburg center for research in black culture: firelei bez: joy out of fire highlighted women whose legacies are maintained and preserved by the archives of the schomburg and was on view from may 1 through november 24, 2018. Between june and november of 2018, joy out of fire attracted features eight large-scale installations created from organic material to mirror the shapes found in the surrounding environment. An alumnus of the museum's famed artist-in-residence program, hassinger developed a process for monuments that included a team of 75 community volunteers for the formal installation. Over 100 visitors were present for the monuments opening celebration. The curatorial department also organized 2018 expanding the walls teen photography program's culminating exhibition, developing intention: expanding the walls 2018, which attracted 125 visitors to its opening celebration at the metropolitan museum of art.

Part III - Line 4B - Education and Public Programs

Our education department continues to provide arts-based services to new york city's schoolchildren, parents and educators through partnerships with public schools and youth-serving community organizations. In fy18, we maintained 11 school residencies that served over 500 pre-k-12 students and parents in new york city schools through our teaching artists' classroom-based instruction; additional resources and professional development opportunities were extended to 132 school educators, and museum educators made select curricula publicly accessible via the studio museum's webpage, free of charge. The education team led a total of 42 one-hour, discussion-based guided exhibition tours in fy18, serving a total of 1653 participants. The department also launched a new initiative, find art here, which brings our permanent collection into schools, libraries, and service centers in harlem. In addition to providing high-quality reproductions of artworks, the studio museum will collaborate with each location to offer public programs and education initiatives, including collection-based curriculum materials anchored in art education and visual literacy. The reproductions, paired with interpretative wall texts, are currently installed in eight locations throughout harlem with imminent plans for expansion. Books, authors & kids and lil' studio continued in fy18, occurring on a monthly basis and serving 886 little ones and their families. In fy18, the public programs & community engagement department directly engaged 6,281 visitors in 49 public programs designed for adult audiences. All programs were free and open to the public, expanded upon our seasonal exhibitions, and surveyed prevalent issues in contemporary art and black culture. Our broad range of art-inspired experiences put visitors in conversation with 84 leading cultural producers. Last look weekend was a four-day celebration of art, history and community, marking the closing of the fictions exhibition and celebrating the studio museum's new building. Seven public programs took place during the weekend, giving over 850 visitors the opportunity to welcome the museum's new era by participating in a diverse series of curator-led tours, artist talks and performances, and social mixers. The closing celebration brought out many of the artists featured in the exhibition, including texas isaiah, sherrill roland, and paul stephen benjamin. Assistant curator, exhibitions connie h. Choi, hallie ringle, and other members of the curatorial department led tours throughout the event. Choi also moderated a conversation between artist julie mehretu and mabel o. Wilson, associate professor of architecture at columbia's graduate school of architecture planning and preservation. The public programs department also completed the first full year of community action network (can), which brought together over 30 local voices and perspectives on issues of visibility, community outreach and accessibility.

Part III - Line 4C - Curatorial

Through curatorial projects, the studio museum presented highly-acclaimed exhibitions that embodied our dual commitment to revising art history and offering fresh perspectives on contemporary art for visitors of all ages. This year launched a major effort to digitize the collection, that will allow researchers, scholars and our own staff members access to the museum's holdings.

PART III, LINE 4:

The museum's permanent collection includes over 1,600 paintings, sculptures, watercolors, drawings, pastels, prints, photographs, mixed media works and installations dating from the nineteenth century to the present day. The museum's acquisition committee facilitates the growth of the collection through donation and purchase. Artists in the collection include romare bearden, robert colescott, jacob lawrence, norman lewis, chris ofili, betye saar, lorna simpson, kara walker and hale woodruff, as well as many former artists-in-residence. The museum is also the custodian of an extensive archive of the work of photographer james vanderzee, the quintessential chronicler of the harlem community from 1906 to 1983.

PART V, LINE 4:

The museum considers the following factors in making a determination to appropriate or accumulate donor-restricted endowment funds: 1. The duration and preservation of the fund; 2. The purposes of the museum and the donor-restricted endowment fund; 3. General economic conditions; 4. The possible effect of inflation and deflation; 5. The expected total return from income and the appreciation of investments; 6. Other resources of the museum; and 7. The investment policies of the museum. Earnings from the endowment fund are to be used to support programmatic activity including but not limited to the artist-in0residence (air) program, artlooks program, exhibitions and general operating expenses.
