Explorers Club

“The explorers club's research collections date from 1472, and contain founding documents and minutes, deceased member records, flag expedition records, event programs, publications, and first-hand accounts and journals from expedition teams. Approximately 14,000 volumes (1,400 of which are considered rare books, 550 linear feet of archives, photographs, lantern slides, and manuscripts, 1,000 artifacts, 3,500 maps, and 500 films and videos make up the bulk of the collections. The club's art and artifact collection includes a wide range of items including paintings, sculptures, framed photographs, and other artwork; retired expedition flags, club memorabilia; tools and equipment; taxidermy; and ethnographic items, and a peary north pole sledge. The collections assist with the mission to preserve the history of the club and to assist those interested and engaged in exploration and scientific research. Modern explorers are now studying in detail what the pioneers revealed in outline. The collections are used by a wide range of researchers including club members, biographers, genealogists, filmmakers, curators, writers, journalists, independent enthusiasts, and students. The research collections department receives approximately 400 requests per year on average, which include e-mail or telephone inquiries and in-person research visits. Approximately 40% of requests come from club members, administration and staff, and 60% from members of the general public. Roughly 80% of requests concern the club's archives and manuscripts.”

“Under the fasb asc 740, income taxes, an organization must recognize the tax benefit associated with tax positions taken for tax return purposes when it is more likely than not the position will be sustained upon examination by a taxing authority. The club does not believe it has taken any material uncertain tax positions and, accordingly, it has not recorded any liability for unrecognized tax benefits. The club has filed for and received income tax exemptions in the jurisdictions where it is required to do so. Additionally, the club has filed irs form 990 information returns, as required, and all other applicable returns in jurisdictions where so required. For the years ended june 30, 2022 and 2021, there were no interest or penalties recorded or included in the statements of activities. The club is subject to routine audit by a taxing authority. As of june 30, 2022, the club was not currently subject to any examination by a taxing authority.”
