“The organization possesses a library, an archives and manuscripts repository, and an object collection, collectively known as "research collections". The collections contain approximately 13,000 volumes, 550 linear feet of archives and manuscripts, and 900 objects housed throughout the organization's lowell thomas building. The organization recognizes its obligation to preserve, conserve, and make available the unique and important records in its custody and thus employs a full-time curator of research collections to oversee the management of the collections, including the functions of acquisition and disposal, arrangement and description, preservation, reference service, and access and outreach. The organization's collections are of local, regional, national and even international importance. Among the organization's treasures are items as varied as part of a medieval cloister from trie-en-bigorre in france, a transmitter used by admiral richard byrd during his second antarctic expedition and the nucleus of a significant and varied photograph collection. The organization's collections are particularly strong at documenting polar history and the history of the organization itself. They comprise unique records for the activities of well-known explorers such as carl akeley, roy chapman andrews, martin johnson, lowell thomas, sir edmund hillary, jane goodall, sylvia earle, neil armstrong and buzz aldrin. In furtherance of its educational mission to promote the acquisition of knowledge through exploration and preserve the "instinct to explore", the organization makes its collections available for use by a wide range of people in a variety of fields including biographers, genealogists, filmmakers, curators, writers, journalists, photo researchers, independent enthusiasts, staff members, and students. People use the information that we provide to plan expeditions, to learn about the history of exploration, and to promote exploration and its history in magazines, books, film and other media. In addition, the organization's research collections are used by members and staff to further efficient administration of the organization as a whole, allowing it to focus greater resources on other programmatic functions.”

“Under FASB ASC 740, "Income Taxes", an organization must recognize the tax benefit associated with tax positions taken for tax return purposes when it is more likely than not the position will be sustained upon examination by a taxing authority. The Explorers Club does not believe it has taken any material uncertain tax positions and, accordingly, it has not recorded any liability for unrecognized tax benefits. The organization has filed for and received income tax exemptions in the jurisdictions where it is required to do so. Additionally, the organization has filed IRS Form 990 information returns, as required, and all other applicable returns in jurisdictions where so required. For the year ended June 30, 2015, there was no interest or penalties recorded or included in the statement of activities. The organization is subject to routine audit by a taxing authority. As of June 30, 2015, the organization was not subject to any examination by a taxing authority. The organization believes it is no longer subject to income tax examinations for the years prior to 2012.”
