Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Change in value of perpetual trust 49,285. Cancellation of grants 1,061,918. Grant refunds 60,928.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The institute's endowment consists of four donor-restricted funds and a board designated fund established to support fellowships and other research programs.

PART X, LINE 2:

The institute follows the provisions of the financial accounting standards board's ("fasb") accounting standards codification ("asc") topic 740, income taxes, relating to accounting and reporting for uncertainty in income taxes. For the institute, these provisions could be applicable to the incurrence of unrelated business income. Because of the institute's general tax-exempt status, management believes asc topic 740 has not had, and is not anticipated to have, a material impact on the institute's financial statements.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Cancellation of grants 1,061,918.
