Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Morgan Library & Museum celebrates and shares the history and process of human creativity from antiquity to the present day through the preservation, study, and interpretation of a dynamic and growing collection.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Library services: the morgan library & museum is one of eighteen independent research libraries in the united states and, as such, makes the collections available to qualified researchers for study on-site in the reading room and drawing study center. With the completion of an expanded complex in early 2006, the new sherman fairchild reading room became available to scholars. With increased seating capacity, full electronic services, and an improved working environment, the reading room meets the needs of researchers in the twenty-first century.an online catalog of the collections, corsair, is accessible through the morgan's web site at www.themorgan.org. An active program of scholarly catalog and facsimile publications, as well as reprographic services (digital images, photographs, microfilm, and slides), helps to extend the reach of the morgan's scholarly services and support study of the collections off-site.the morgan has had professional paper and book conservation facilities since the 1950s, when they were among the first such labs in the united states. The morgan's paper conservation facilities were dramatically enhanced with the february 2002 completion of the thaw conservation center. The morgan's conservators oversee the preservation of the collections and also undertake surveys and treatment projects of discrete collection areas. The collections consist almost entirely of works on paper and related porous supports (vellum, parchment, papyri), and the conservators have developed special expertise in the conservation, restoration, and repair of such objects. Both a working and teaching facility, the thaw center receives requests for assistance from institutions in the united states and abroad. It offers advanced internships in conservation techniques and practices.
Activity 3
Public programs: in fiscal year 2011, 11,021 people attended a wide range of concerts, lectures, films, family programs and workshops, many by renowned artists and experts in their field. Music programming included concerts by numerous presenting organizations and performances related to the exhibitions mark twain: a skeptic's progress and roy lichtenstein: the black-and-white drawings, 1961-1968, among others. An active program of lectures and gallery talks primarily addressed themes related to exhibitions on view. Docents gave 274 tours of the morgan's campus and exhibitions to over 2,100 visitors. The morgan's school program, exploring with the morgan, served 5,097 k-12 students of diverse communities.
