Library ProgramThe Frick Art Reference Library serves members of general public with an interest in art, including scholars, art professionals, collectors, and students. The library's book and photograph research collections relate chiefly to paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints, and illuminated manuscripts from the fourth to the mid-twentieth centuries by European and American artists. Archival materials and special collections augment the research collections with documents pertaining to the history of collecting art and of Henry Clay Frick's collecting in particular. In 2012, the library served 5,887 visitors (consisting of 1,636 individual researchers) and responded to 894 email inquiries and answered 5,883 on-site research questions.The Center for the History of Collecting is a program that was established to foster awareness and scholarly study of the formation of fine and decorative arts collections and to promote the relevance of this subject to the history of art and culture. In 2012, the Center for the History of Collecting organized the following academic symposium:Money for the Most Exquisite Things: Bankers and Collecting from the Medici to the RockefellersMarch 1 - 2, 2013Local Heroes: Artists and the Importance of PlaceMay 4, 2013The Center additionally awarded seven grants to graduate students and post-doctoral scholars undertaking original research within the field of the history of art collecting.
