A MEMBER OF FEEDING AMERICA,ISLAND HARVEST HAS DELIVERED CLOSE TO 103.9 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD,SUPPLEMENTING CLOSE TO 93.16 MILLION MEALS,SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1992. WE ALSO PROVIDED OTHER IMPORTANT SERVICES AND DISASTER RELIEF WORK.IN SUPPORT OF OUR MISSION TO END HUNGER AND REDUCE FOOD WASTE ON LONG ISLAND, ISLAND HARVEST IS ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN EDUCATIONAL AND HUNGER AWARENESS PROGRAMS TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE INSIDIOUS BUT OFTEN UNRECOGNIZED PROBLEM OF HUNGER HERE, IN ONE OF THE WEALTHIEST REGIONS OF THE COUNTRY, AND HOW INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS, AND COMMERCIAL FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.AT THE CORE OF ISLAND HARVEST IS ITS FOOD COLLECTION AND DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM. THROUGH THIS INITIATIVE, VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF COLLECT SURPLUS FOOD FROM FARMERS, WHOLESALERS, DISTRIBUTORS, MANUFACTURERS SUPERMARKETS, RESTAURANTS, CATERERS AND THE COMMUNITY. SURPLUS NUTRITIOUS FOOD IS ALSO TRANSPORTED TO ISLAND HARVEST'S WAREHOUSES FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR DISTRIBUTION. ALL ACQUIRED PRODUCT IS DISTRIBUTED BY ISLAND HARVEST STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS TO A NETWORK OF MORE THAN 500 FOOD PANTRIES, SOUP KITCHENS, SHELTERS, DAY CARE PROGRAMS, SENIOR CENTERS, AND OTHER NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WITH FEEDING PROGRAMS ACROSS LONG ISLAND. ISLAND HARVEST OPERATES MANY DIRECT SERVICE FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAMS GEARED TO SPECIFIC AUDIENCES OF PEOPLE IN NEED. THE CHILDHOOD NUTRITION PROGRAM DIRECTLY TARGETS THE PROBLEM OF CHILDHOOD HUNGER ON LONG ISLAND. THE ORGANIZATION DISTRIBUTES TENS OF THOUSANDS OF FOOD PACKS EACH SCHOOL YEAR FILLED WITH FOUR NUTRITIOUS MEALS, SNACKS, AND SERVINGS OF MILK IN SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT LONG ISLAND. RECIPIENTS ARE CHILDREN WHO RELY ON THE FREE SCHOOL LUNCH AND BREAKFAST PROGRAMS AND MAY NOT GET ENOUGH TO EAT OVER THE WEEKEND WHEN SCHOOL IS NOT IN SESSION. THE SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM SUPPLIES LUNCHES TO HUNDREDS OF CHILDREN DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS WHEN THE SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. SENIOR HUNGER-RELIEF PROGRAMS INCLUDE A MOBILE FOOD PANTRY DELIVERING FOOD AND SERVICES TO SENIORS AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES. OPERATION HOPE IS ANOTHER DIRECT SERVICE MOBILE FOOD PANTRY DELIVERING FOOD AND SERVICES TO VETERANS AND MILITARY FAMILIES.ISLAND HARVEST IS ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS TO SUPPORT PEOPLE IN NEED ON LONG ISLAND WHO HAVE FACED HARDSHIP AS A RESULT OF A MAN MADE OR NATURAL DISASTER. IN ADDITION, ISLAND HARVEST ENGAGES IN EDUCATION AND HUNGER AWARENESS PROGRAMS TO INFORM THEIR NETWORK OF MEMBER AGENCIES, PEOPLE IN NEED AND THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF HUNGER HERE ON LONG ISLAND, AND TO HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH THE PROBLEMS OF HUNGER AND RELATED ISSUES. THESE PROGRAMS COVER IMPORTANT SAFETY NET ISSUES SUCH AS, SNAP ENROLLMENT (FOOD STAMPS), NUTRITION, HEALTH AND FINANCIAL LITERACY, IN AN EFFORT TO LIFT PEOPLE OUT OF DEPENDENCY INTO SELF SUFFICIENCY. ADDITIONALLY, OUR PROGRAMS EDUCATE INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES, AND STUDENTS. ISLAND HARVEST IS AN ESSENTIAL HUNGER RELIEF PARTNER OFFERING FOOD, EDUCATION, AND ADVOCACY. THE ORGANIZATION COLLABORATES WITH GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY LEADERS TO EXAMINE FOOD ACCESS AND PUBLIC HEALTH.
