Activity 2

Design and Construction: Prospect Park Alliance restores the landscape and buildings within the Park while preserving the historic design. Projects are taken through a design and approval process, in partnership with the City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation, and are surpervised during construction by Prospect Park Alliance. Projects designed by the Prospect Park Alliance have won a number of prestigious awards. During the year ended June 30, 2012, the continued focus has been the completion of the Lakeshore restoration and ongoing construction of the Lakeside Center with two skating rinks and a children's water playground, scheduled to open in late fall 2013. Also during the year, the Nethermead Arch restoration was completed.

Activity 3

Field Operations and Woodlands: Prospect Park Alliance partners with the City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation in caring for the natural environment within the Park. The Aboriculture crew cares for the roughly 40,000 trees of Prospect Park, which include almost 150 species and make up Brooklyn's only forest. The Park provides priceless natural habitat for wildlife and Park visitors as well as a much-neede migration stop for thousands of birds. (Prospect Park has been designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society.) The Park's 250 acres of natural areas are maintained and monitored year-round by the Alliance's Natural Resources Crew, which works with volunteers and the Woodlands Youth Crew to restore new sections in the Park designated as natural areas. The Natural Resources Crew also engages youth through its work with both the Woodlands Youth Crew and the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment. During fiscal year 2012, 492 trees were pruned, 1,466 trees, 8,210 herbaceous plants, and 3,349 shrubs were planted, and 122,760 square feet of turf were restored. The Alliance provides maintenance staff at the Parade Ground, which was renovated and restored with public funds.
