Activity 2

After School Programs - provide opportunities to develop both academic competence and life skills through extracurricular programs. The After-School programs include Cubbies/Cougars Basketball, Independent Living Overnights, Friday Night Recreation and Academic Intervention (AIS). These programs enable our students to be provided with academic support, as well as to practice athletic and functional skills critical to the development of the "whole child" at the Henry Viscardi School.

Activity 3

The Henry Viscardi School Approaches to Augmentative Communication establishes a unified approach to the delivery of Augmentative/Alternative Communication Systems (AAC), thereby assisting children in achieving their full human potential. By establishing viable AAC systems in the younger grades, we greatly enhance the academic success of students in the older grades. The transition from class-to-class (here at HVS) or from HVS to community schools is also greatly expedited when a viable AAC system is in place. Ensuring that each student has at least one viable means of accessing technology, allowing them to interface with the curriculum and communication. Viable access typically requires thousands of trials to develop reliable motor use. This objective requires staff to build a curriculum that adheres to NY State standards and employs creative strategies for providing students with numerous functional opportunities for practicing this motor access through the school day.
