“The urban assembly ("ua") is a non-profit organization that creates, manages and serves a growing network of new york city public secondary schools. We are dedicated to empowering underserved students by providing them with the academic and life skills necessary for college and career success. During the 2014-15 school year, we served more than 9,000 students in 23 schools from under-resourced neighborhoods across the bronx, manhattan and brooklyn. The ua does not screen student enrollment. Our student population is 80% low-income, 75% of students enter below grade level, and 20%-nearly twice the city average-need special education services. By addressing and transcending the challenges our students face, the ua school network consistently achieves a graduation rate 10% or more above the city average, and nearly 20% above the city average for african american and latino students. 80% of ua graduates enroll in college. The ua has a two-prong strategic focus: 1. The creation and support of high quality, effective secondary schools for predominantly low-income students. 2.the development of best practices and innovative programs that will be disseminated throughout our network and the field of public education.”

“4A.THE INSTRUCTIONAL TEAM: The Instructional Team builds schools' capacity to ensure and support high performing school leadership and rigorous academics for all students. The team is committed to helping students achieve academic excellence leading to post-secondary success. They work directly with school leaders and teachers in service of the schools instructional goals. The Instructional Team believes that a responsive, collaborative coaching approach is necessary to build a culture of continuous improvement in our schools. 4B.CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION TEAM: The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Team builds the capacity of CTE schools in the Urban Assembly network to deliver high-quality, industry-supported, state-approved CTE programs at scale. They aim to ensure that 100% of UA CTE graduates commit to a personal postsecondary plan involving further education, employment, or a combination thereof that is all the stronger and more individualized for the increased options CTE affords. The CTE Team captures the most promising and leverageable career-readiness practices from UA CTE schools for effective use in non-CTE schools and programs network-wide. 4C.THE COLLEGE READINESS TEAM: The College Readiness Team builds schools capacity to develop structures and supports that ensure college access and success for every student. Successful postsecondary planning begins at the earliest grade served at a UA school, and is infused throughout the entire school culture. To ensure students are accepted and able to matriculate into the college or post-secondary pathway of their choice, each high school has a full-time college counselor who is supported by the UA College Readiness Team. To systematize and streamline parts of the college application process, all high schools use Naviance (a student tracking platform with coaching tools) to track and submit applications. 4D.
