Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Hartford seminary prepares students to understand and live in today's multi-faith world. The seminary provides educational opportunities that enable participants to understand themselves and their faith traditions better and to contribute more fully to a culture of dialogue and creative leadership in their civic and faith communities locally, nationally and abroad.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Research and grants:the seminary's hartford institute for religion research produces research and resources that support leadership and congregational development as practical, theological activity. Our research uses the perspectives and methods of the social sciences to study religious leadership, and religious organizations and their social/cultural context. Our resources are published both traditionally and online. Our work is externally funded by, typically, multiyear grants. We currently have five major projects. Anticipated publications during the 2011/2012 academic year include american congregations 2011, mega churches 2010, holy toll a decade of change, reach out, trends in use of technology, and pastors and multifaith situations.
Activity 3
Scholarly journals:the muslim world is an academic publication on the study of islam and christian-muslim relations that comes out four times per year. It is owned and edited by hartford seminary, and published by wiley blackwell. The annual muslim world report is issued in the february following the conclusion of the year being reported. Thus, the statistics i will cite herein have been taken from the 2010 annual report. The number of libraries with access to the muslim world increased significantly during 2010. Over 2,600 institutions worldwide offered paid access to the latest articles in 2010 via traditional subscriptions and consortia licensing arrangements. A further 407 institutions had access through philanthropic programs offered to developing nations and their libraries. Over 6,500 institutions were offered access to embargoed content through ebsco databases. There were 607 institutional subscriptions to the muslim world, representing a renewal rate of 97.3%, up from the previous year. 847 individuals have registered to receive an email table of contents alert each time a new issue is published. The muslim world seeks wide distribution of its journal to libraries around the world, and as large a readership as possible. We engage in no discriminatory practices regarding who has access to the muslim world, nor who is able to submit articles for possible publication. We do offer gratis subscriptions to libraries in developing countries upon their request through philanthropic licensing deals arranged through wiley-blackwell. Neither the publishers nor hartford seminary, as editor of the muslim world, deal directly with students in the publicaiton of this journal, unless they have chosen to submit articles for consideration. All articles, regardless by whom they have been submitted, are sent to our referred peer editorial review board. The board selects articles on the basis of academic merit and subject suitability alone.reviews in religion theology reviews most recent books in religion and theology and thereby offers an accessible, informed and up-to-date guide to contemporary developments and publishing in religion and theology, providing a forum in which the latest publications are evaluated and discussed. Hartford seminary is in charge of editorship of the journal and wiley-blackwell is in charge of the production, marketing and distribution. Each year hartford seminary, under the editorship of uriah y. Kim, is responsible for four issues and the total annual editorial budget is 664 pages. Rrt has 163 institutional subscriptions, and over 2,190 institutions worldwide have access to the journal via the wiley-blackwell sales programs.the journal conversations in religion and theology is a book review journal that is published twice yearly and offered as part of the subscription to one of the semianry's other journals, reviews in religion and theology. Its distinction is that every review is followed (within the same issue) by a response from the book's author. It has 160 hard copy institutional subscriptions, and an additional 140 institutions that access it online. The majority of our readers do access individual articles online - either through their institutional ties, or on a pay per use basis, with nearly 5,000 downloads of articles in 2010. The objective of crt is two-fold: to create scholarly conversations around important books, and to provide book reviews to help libaries and scholars in the broad discipline of theology and religious studies, and provide some guidance as to what is worth picking up.
