Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To offer comprehensive services in an environment where innovation and teaching are integral to care; where we are proud to serve all; where meeting the challenge of complex medical needs is viewed as a defining competency; and where quality and safety of care are a constant.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The Institute of Living (Hartford Hospital's Department of Psychiatry) is referred to as the IOL. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) estimates that in 2011 less than 40% of individuals experiencing a mental illness received treatment and less than 60% of those with a severe mental illness received any psychiatric services. The IOL's efforts to meet the demand for services led the Hospital to expand ambulatory services in several program areas (described below) and to improve throughput from our psychiatric emergency service and consultation/liaison service to our inpatient beds. Our multi-year "culture change" program has led to such patient-focused innovations as the introduction of comfort rooms, hourly rounding on all inpatient units, and significant reductions in the use of seclusion and restraint. The IOL's residency programs continued to thrive with an outstanding class of new residents in both our general adult and child and adolescent residencies. Our research programs had an excellent year as well with over $5 million in new grants awarded and 100 publications generated. As we enter 2012, we look forward to the many challenges that will face our system of care and we anticipate and accommodate the needs of health care reform.Statistical Data:Total discharges for the year were 4,242. The number of adult day treatments was 8,590. The IOL treated 1,713 patients for eating disorder, 4,107 patients for Schizophrenia rehabilitation, and 2,980 patients went through the DBT program. The average length of stay was 8.7 days and the average daily census was 100.9. 35% of admissions were Hartford residents, while the rest were from other areas within the State of Connecticut. Patient Care Activities and Program Development:Patient care activities and program development were guided by the IOL's internal goals for 2011. Highlights included a focus on significant growth in two ambulatory programs, the Young Adult Program and the Center for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Another significant development was the consolidation of The Webb School Bloomfield campus into the Grace Webb School at the IOL. The consolidation provided significant cost savings and creative opportunities for programming within the school. Our Health Psychology Service continued to expand with strategic decisions to staff psychology positions within Hartford Hospital's Transplant Program and the Nascent Epilepsy Program.Quality and Performance Measures:For the year, the department focused on achieving its internal goals and as a result saw a significant reduction in falls with injury. We continued our program implementation of the IOL's Best Practices, establishing comfort rooms/spaces on all of our inpatient units and ensuring the implementation of a comfort plan for all adult and geriatric patients. Perhaps the most significant achievement of the IOL's multi-year culture change program has been the reduction in the use of seclusion and restraint. In 2011, we reduced the number of unique individuals secluded or restrained by 11.5%. This was accompanied by significant reductions in the number of hours spent in seclusion/restraint. A number of other initiatives touched on service excellence/quality or financial strength. We implemented hourly rounding on all inpatient rooms between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. We implemented an electronic format for our Emergency Department - IOL handoff and revised and standardized an inpatient satisfaction tool.Research, Training and Education:Research: The research enterprise at The Institute of Living is organized in four specialized centers. The Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center, directed by Godfrey Pearlson, M.D., focuses on studies of the major psychiatric disorders using brain imaging and electrophysiological techniques along with genetic analysis. The Anxiety Disorders Center, directed by David Tolin, Ph.D., researches treatments for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, C
Activity 3
IMAGING CENTER AT HARTFORD HOSPITALFor fiscal year 2011 (FY 11), there were approximately 189 full time employees in the Radiology Department. The Department remained committed to developing solutions to maintain and grow the expertise it offers to Hartford Hospital's patients, physicians, and community healthcare providers. Hartford Hospital and Jefferson Radiology under Connecticut Imaging Partners have a joint ventured MRI in Wethersfield and an office at 100 Hazard Avenue in Enfield, CT, a successful full service imaging office. The volume for MRI patients in this office was 1275 patients. This relationship continued to flourish with other prospects on the horizon. During the year, the Department experienced a drop in the number of activities performed. The decrease in the listed number of procedures performed was actually due to changes in how exams are bundled and coded. In actuality, the Department increased the services provided as well as increased the number of patients served. The number of procedures performed for FY 11 was 186,383 which represented a 5.3% increase from FY 10. Trends in Frequency of Operations/Procedures:General radiology procedures increased from 33,100 to 36,747 for an 11% increase. MRI procedures decrease from 9,977 to 9893. CT procedures decreased from 43,826 to 41,322 which is a 5.71% decrease, but patients increased from 26,350 to 28,749 which again is the result of CPT codes being combined. Patients increased by 9.1%. Fluoroscopy volumes increased by 13.54%, which was an additional 560 procedures or 396 patients. Nuclear Medicine nationally has continued to decrease. Our decrease was 2.09%. ED imaging increased from 40,886 in FY 10 to 43,916 for a 7.4% increase. Ultrasound volume increased by 11.47% from 11,487 to 12,805, this was an additional 856 patients. Mammography showed a growth of 14.92% which was an increase of 1453 procedures for FY 11. There were 802 more patients than in the previous year. OR imaging showed growth which was more outpatients than inpatients. The increase was 10.3% or 740 more procedures. The number of Interventional Radiology patients increased by 4.18%. The number of Interventional Neuro Radiology volume increased by 32.8%. Diagnostic procedures increased by 33.9% while therapeutic cases increased by 30.9%. In August 2011, a Pipeline Stent procedure was performed at Hartford Hospital by Drs. Gary Spiegel, Martin Ollenschleger and Stephan Ohki. This was a first in New England.Medical Staffing:The following Radiologists joined the department staff over the past year: Dr. Anu Bansal: Neuroradiologist, trained at Beth Israel and Brigham and Women's hospital, with Fellowship training at Mallinckrodt Institute. Dr. Niv Decalo: General Radiologist completing his Residency at Hartford Hospital. Dr. Prachi Dubey: General Radiologist trained at BI Deaconess and Johns Hopkins. Dr. Joanna Jacunski: Completed her Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Hartford Hospital followed by a Vascular Interventional Fellowship at Brigham & Women's Hospital. Dr. Diana James: Diagnostic Radiology and Breast Imaging Fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.Dr. Ryan Kaliney: General Radiology Residency followed by MSK Fellowship at University of Virginia Health System. Dr. David Marinelli: Trained in General Radiology followed by Angio/Interventional Fellowship at Hospital of University of Pennsylvania. Department Staffing:Jefferson Radiology and Hartford Hospital Department of Radiology continue to attract outstanding talent. Once again our doctors are recognized in the 'Best Docs of Greater Hartford' publications with 13 of the 17 named Radiologists being members of Jefferson Radiology and on staff at the hospital. This year for the first time, Connecticut Magazine listed the Top Radiologists in CT and Drs. Markowitz and Cronin were recognized in that publication. Dr. Thomas Farquhar will be joining Jefferson Radiology and the Department at Hartford Hospital in January 2012. He comp

We use the findings from these studies to be sure our programs match the community's health needs. The Hospital provides free and low-cost care that respects the dignity of each patient.
