Founded in 1973, the rhode island council for the humanities is a state affiliate of the national endowment for the humanities. As a non-profit 50l(c)(3), the council receives funding from federal, state and private sources.

“The council is exempt from income taxes as a public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Management believes that the council operates in a manner consistent with its tax-exempt status at both the federal and state levels. The council annually files irs form 990 - return of organization exempt from income tax, reporting various information that the irs uses to monitor the activities of tax-exempt entities. The form 990 is subject to review by the taxing authorities generally for a period of three years after they were filed. The form 990 for the years ended october 31, 2014, 2015, and 2016 are subject to examination by the taxing authorities. The council currently has no tax examinations in progress.”
“The council has irrevocably transferred amounts raised for the creation of endowment funds (the funds) to the rhode island foundation (an unrelated community foundation, the foundation). In accordance with the terms of the instrument of transfer (the instrument), annual distributions from the funds will be in accordance with the distribution policies of the foundation. The terms of the articles of council of the foundation and the instrument give the foundation's board of directors variance power over the funds. Variance power gives the foundation's board the authority to redirect distributions from the funds at their discretion if "circumstances have so changed since the execution of the instrument as to render unnecessary, undesirable, impractical, or impossible a literal compliance with the terms of the instrument. In all respects, the use of the funds shall be in accordance with the charitable purpose of the foundation.”

OUR GRANTS TOUCHED THE LIVES OF TENS OF THOUSANDS OF RHODE ISLANDERS - SPARKING THOUGHTFUL COMMUNITY EXCHANGE, BUILDING AUDIENCES, INNOVATING NEW METHODS, CREATING KNOWLEDGE, AND OPENING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. TOGETHER THESE PROJECTS PUT THE HUMANITIES INTO ACTION FOR AN ENGAGED DEMOCRATIC PUBLIC AND CULTURE. IN 2018, RHODE ISLAND CENTER FOR THE BOOK PROGRAMS REACHED OVER 6,500 RHODE ISLANDERS THROUGH 53 EVENTS AND PROGRAMS. THE 2018 READING ACROSS RHODE ISLAND PROGRAM SELECTION, THE HATE U GIVE, BY ANGIE THOMAS, ENGAGED READERS THROUGH PROGRAMS AT SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, BUSINESSES, BOOKSTORES, AND SENIOR CENTERS. THE PROGRAM BROUGHT TOGETHER AN AUDIENCE OF OVER 500 PEOPLE FOR A CULMINATING EVENT WITH THE AUTHOR AT RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE. KIDS READING ACROSS RHODE ISLAND ALSO HELD AN EVENT AT THE STATE HOUSE WITH AN AUDIENCE OF 500 TO KICK OFF PROGRAMS RELATED TO THE 2018 SELECTION, THE FIRST RULE OF PUNK, BY CELIA C. PEREZ. KRARI ENCOURAGED SUMMER READING FOR RHODE ISLAND CHILDREN BY HOSTING 11 FREE LIBRARY PROGRAMS IN DIVERSE COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE STATE. AFTER OVER SIX YEARS UNDER THE HUMANITIES COUNCIL'S FISCAL SPONSORSHIP, THE CENTER FOR THE BOOK IS MOVING FORWARD AS AN INDEPENDENT NONPROFIT. THE HUMANITIES COUNCIL IS PROUD TO HAVE PROMOTED THE CENTER FOR THE BOOK'S GROWTH AND IMPACT ON LITERACY AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT THROUGH READING IN RHODE ISLAND, AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO ADVANCE THESE SHARED GOALS. THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CENTER FOR PUBLIC HUMANITIES AND CULTURAL HERITAGE AT BROWN UNIVERSITY AND THE RHODE ISLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY, THE COUNCIL CONTINUED TO DEVELOP RHODE TOUR, A WEBSITE AND SMARTPHONE APP FOR STORIES ABOUT RHODE ISLAND CULTURE AND HISTORY. THE APP AND WEBSITE NOW INCLUDE 25 TOURS AND NEARLY 250 STORIES ABOUT RHODE ISLAND AND HAVE BEEN ACCESSED BY OVER 23,460 VISITORS WITH THE LARGEST PERCENTAGE OF USERS BEING 25-34 YEAR-OLDS. THE COUNCIL PARTNERED WITH THE PUBLIC'S RADIO TO PRODUCE "(PRESS)ED: A PODCAST ABOUT THE MEDIA, FAKE NEWS, AND THE FUTURE OF OUR DEMOCRACY." IT HAS REACHED THOUSANDS OF LISTENERS AND INCLUDED A PANEL DISCUSSION AT SLATER MILL IN PAWTUCKET WITH AN AUDIENCE OF OVER 100. (PRESS)ED IS PART OF THE NATIONAL "DEMOCRACY AND THE INFORMED CITIZEN" INITIATIVE OF THE FEDERATION OF STATE HUMANITIES COUNCILS, GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE ANDREW W. MELLON FOUNDATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PULITZER PRIZES.
