FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Historic salem's mission is to ensure that the historic resources of salem, ma which are the key to its identity, its quality of life and its economic vitality, are preserved for future generations and that new development complements the historic character of the city. Historic salem accomplishes its mission through preservation, education, advocacy and partnership.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Historic salem inc. (hsi) is one of the nation's oldest preservation advocacy organizations founded in 1944 to save the corwin house and the bowditch house from destruction. Since then hsi has been a leader in blocking urban renewal in the 1970's, re-taking responsibility for the national register nathaniel bowditch house after years of municipal neglect and restoring it. Hsi has also worked with a neighborhood group to save the 1700's pope house. More recently, historic salem restored the interior of the nathaniel bowditch house. We actively work with neighborhood groups, the city and city boards on issues ranging from demolition of historic structures and new development, as well as the city's preservation plan and its execution. Historic salem presents the annual christmas in salem tour which opens historic houses and buildings to the public decorated for the holiday season. "christmas in salem" draws more than 2,000 people annually to enjoy the extraordinary wealth of intact historic architecture and building fabric in salem. Historic salem also presents lectures and symposia. Recently for example, hsi organized a widely recognized symposum on ada louise huxtable, showcasing her leading role in launching the national historic preservation movement. The symposium focused on the importance of preservation for sense of place as well as the economic value of preservation. Talking about design (tad) is a series of lectures describing the importance and elements of urban design and preservation. Historic salem partners with other non profits in salem including the salem athenaeum, the pickering house, the house of the seven gables, salem historical society, the salem garden club and the peabody essex museum and is a member of salem's preservation partnership.
