IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Smith Students Aid Society, Inc. endowment provides the funding stream for assistance to students with need that is unmet through traditional sources. Graduating seniors can receive a grant to help with job search and interview expenses or for graduate school applications. Students may arrive on campus with inadequate winter clothing the Society can provide funds to buy winter clothing and/or boots. Other students may need to go home for a family emergency. The Society can help meet that need as it also does for those students with uninsured medical and dental expenses. Some students apply for help with credit bearing or non-credit bearing courses or programs or travel to enable them to graduate and to enrich their educational experience. Students with a credit shortage can receive aid in funding for summer courses. Students can receive vouchers to purchase textbooks or a computer used in Smith College courses. The Smith Students Aid Society endowment is part of the Trustees of the Smith College Pooled Investments. The Society follows the Colleges spending rate approach that seeks the largest responsible annual contribution to operations while providing adequate downside protection against periods of declining returns and while preserving the purchasing power of the endowment to benefit future generations of Smith College students.
