Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Sudbury valley trustees, inc. ("the organization") works to protect natural areas and farmland for wildlife and people in the 36 communities that surround the sudbury, assabet, and concord rivers. The organization cares for some of the region's most important forests, wetlands, and grasslands natural areas that support wildlife habitat, working farms, and recreational trails. The organization currently owns 2,477 acres on 95 properties and holds conservation easements (known as conservation restrictments in massachusetts) on 103 additional lands that span 3,523 acres. The organization has also helped to protect more than 70 miles of trails.

Annually each member of the board of directors reviews the conflict of interst policy and discloses any possible conflicts by signing a form to that effect. A board member must recuse himself if a vote is to be taken on an issue on which the member has a conflict of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15B: Compensation Review and Approval Process for Officers and Key Employees

Compensation for the executive director is evaluated annually based on achievement of goals agreed upon by the executive committee of the board of directors. The executive committee takes into consideration compensation packages of executive directors for comparable organizations. The executive committee makes recommendations to the board of directors which votes on the executive director's compensation package.

Financial Statement Notes

Part II, Line 5: Summarized Policy

The policy regarding conservation easements states staff will conduct annual monitoring of conservation easements, encouraging landowners to be involved with the site visits and maintaining good relations with them. In cases of violation, sudbury valley trustees will assess the problem, work in a timely manner to protect the values of the conservation easement and find a resolution that fits the specific situation.

Part II, Line 9: Organization Reporting of conservation easements.

Conservation easements donated to the organization have no market value in the hands of the organization and are not considered support. Accordingly, no entry to the books is made when an easement is received. Expenses to inspect and maintain the organization's easements and conservation lands are material and are shown as part of stewardship expenses in the financial statements.

Part III, Line 1A: If organization elected under SFAS 116 to not report are, historical treasures, O

Conservation land is not recorded in the statement of financial position in accordance with statement of financial accounting standards no. 116 since it qualifies as a collection that is held for public exhibition, education and research in furtherance of public service rather than financial gain. It is protected, kept unencumbered, cared for and preserved, and it is subject to an organizational policy that requires the proceeds from sales of conservation land to be used to acquire other such land. However, land is sometimes acquired on condition that it be transferred to town, state or federal agencies to be held by them for conservation purposes.

Part III, Line 4: Description of organization'S collections and how it furthers its purpose.

Sudbury valley trustees, inc. Is a voluntary organization, receiving support from individuals, businesses and others, committed to protecting wildlife habitat and the ecological integrity of the sudbury, assabet and concord rivers for the benefit of present and future generations. The organization carries out its mission through land acquisition and stewardship in partnership with towns, watershed associations and other environmental organizations within the greater concord basin. The organization currently owns 186 parcels (2,300 acres) and holds 77 conservation restrictions (2,570 acres) in 24 communities and has been instrumental in preserving several thousand acres now protected by public agencies.

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

Income from the restricted endowment is used primarily for the stewardship of conservation land of the organization. Board restricted endowment is used for operating support of the organization.
