Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The Treasurer of the organization reviews the return and then presents the complete return to the full board before filing. If the scheduled quarterly board meeting falls after the filing deadline, the Treasurer will present to the executive committee before filing, and will then share with the full board at the next scheduled meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

It is the policy of the organization to require fiduciaries to provide full disclosure of any contemplated or existing activities or transaction that could create a conflict of interest, or the appearance of a conflict of interest. Fiduciaries include each director, officer, and administrative employees of the organization. Each fiduciary must, on an annual basis, execute a conflict of interest disclosure statement and a questionnaire. The board of directors will review all disclosures and potential conflicts and recommend a course of action, if necessary, with respect to such persons of conflicts.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management

The independent board determines the compensation of the Executive Director based on its evaluation of his/her performance and by gathering data on comparable compensation within the industry. The review that was conducted was formal, and compensation was approved by the full board.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 19: Other Organization Documents Publicly Available

Governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements are made available to the public upon request.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2: New Services

We have spent the past year fundraising, building collaborations and constructing our new center in the Tenderloin neighborhood, it opened its doors to the public in May 2016.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: In-SchoolDuring the 2015-2016 school year we served 34 teachers and 1,700 students at the 9 San Francisco Unified School District Schools through our In-School program. We built a Writers' Room at Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8. For our 2016 Young Authors' Book Project, we released "Walk the Earth in our Shoes and Plant some Seeds Behind You" with 9th and 10th grade students at John OConnell High School. We gave ten $1,500 grants for Teacher of the Month Awards. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Afterschool + SummerOur After-School Tutoring Program remains one of the cornerstone programs of 826 Valencia. During the 2015-2016 year, we hosted the program Mondays through Thursdays throughout the school year for 185 enrolled students, with an average of 30 students each weekday, and an additional 20 students coming for Drop-In Tutoring on Sundays. Highlights of the year included two Young Writers' Wall celebrations, where we honor six students and feature their accomplishments with full color portraits and profiles on the back wall of our writing lab, and two issues of Look Closer/Mira De Circa, our anthology of shorter student works. Our evening tutoring program, called Pathways, supports middle and high school students with their homework. We also grew our Exploring Words Summer Camp to serve 60 elementary and middle school students for 5 weeks.

IRS990/MissionDesc0826 Valencia is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their writing skills and helping teachers get their students excited about writing. Our work is based on the understanding that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success and that great leaps in learning can be made when skilled tutors work one-on-one with students.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0College Career Readiness:We awarded six $15,000 college scholarships to deserving high school seniors and provided ongoing college counseling through ScholarMatch. We also paid stipends to alumni students in internship roles so they could serve as role models for our students while developing professional skills. In addition, we launched a youth leadership track where students learned life skills and served as role models in their program.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Field Trip ProgramDuring the 2015-2016 year, we hosted 105 field trips, with a combined total of 2,263 students from local schools visiting our centers in the Mission and Tenderloin Districts of San Francisco for a morning of high-energy learning. The most popular field trip again this year was one we invented, "Storytelling and Bookmaking," where students write, illustrate, and bind their own books in two hours. We also launched our podcasting field trips in our Tenderloin Center.
