Mission and Program Overview

Mission

New leaders, inc.'s mission is to ensure high academic achievement for all children, especially students in poverty and students of color, by developing transformational school leaders and advancing the policies and practices that allow great leaders to succeed.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Emerging leaders programthe emerging leaders program is a school leadership professional development program for educators on the way to principal training. The emerging leaders program strengthens the leadership skills of talented teachers, coaches, and assistant principals working in urban public schools, putting participants on the pathway to the principalship while building leaders' capacity across a system. In the 2012-13 school year, the emerging leaders program began with over 419 educators serving approximately 41,900 students. The emerging leaders program also serves as an admission pathway to new leaders' aspiring principals program. 79 members of the second cohort of emerging leaders matriculated into the aspiring principals program for the following year.
Activity 3
Epic programepic, the effective practice incentive community, provides new leaders and its partners the opportunity to learn from educators driving gains in high-need urban schools. New leaders established epic in 2006 to link principal and teacher incentive pay to the wide-scale sharing of effective educational practices. The program identifies schools driving significant achievement gains and financially rewards the principals, assistant principals, teachers, and other staff in those schools in exchange for sharing the effective practices that have contributed to the gains. After distributing financial awards to eligible employees in a particular school, epic works to identify the effective practices that led to student achievement gains and then develops a case study or profile of that school practice. The primary components of epic are (1) the development of value-added models for analyzing student achievement data to identify schools making the greatest gains; (2) the recognition and rewarding of school leaders, teachers, and staff in high-gain schools for sharing their effective practices and strategies with other schools; and (3) the creation of comprehensive case studies that are shared with a broad network of schools and educators through an innovative online platform called the epic knowledge system. In the year ending june 30, 2013, epic identified 26 award-winning schools across its three partnership programs and offered educator incentive awards to over 900 school leaders, teachers, instructional staff, and school employees in the district of columbia public schools, the memphis city schools, and the national charter school consortium.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0EPIC PROGRAMEPIC, THE EFFECTIVE PRACTICE INCENTIVE COMMUNITY, PROVIDES NEW LEADERS AND ITS PARTNERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM EDUCATORS DRIVING GAINS IN HIGH-NEED URBAN SCHOOLS.
