Mission and Program Overview

Mission

New leaders, inc.'s mission is to ensure high academic achievement for all children, especially students in poverty and students of color, by developing transformational school leaders and advancing the policies and practices that allow great leaders to succeed.

Major Activities

Activity 2
EPIC ProgramEPIC, the Effective Practice Incentive Community, provides New Leaders and its partners the opportunity to learn from educators driving gains in high-need urban schools. The program identifies schools whose students are making significant achievement gains and financially rewards those schools leaders and educators in exchange for sharing the effective practices that have contributed to the gains. After distributing financial awards to eligible educators in a high-gain school, EPIC works to identify the effective practices that led to student achievement gains and then develops a case study or profile of a schools practice. This content is shared with a large community of educators online via the EPIC Knowledge System. In FY10, EPIC identified 63 schools across its four partnership programs as high-gain schools, and proffered financial awards to nearly 170 school leaders and over 1,500 teachers and instructional staff in the District of Columbia Public Schools, the Memphis City Schools, the National Charter School Consortium, and the Denver Public Schools.
Activity 3
School Support ProgramAs the post-Residency component of its aspiring principal program, New Leaders provided coaching and school support services to a community of 445 principals and assistant principals in 391 schools serving approximately 200,000 students. The support provided was intended to guide the continued development of key personal leadership qualities and the implementation of school-wide practices that will ultimately lead to dramatic student achievement gains. Through city program offices, New Leaders principals and assistant principals had access to ongoing professional development workshops, consultations with expert staff, opportunities to participate in small-group learning and leadership development experiences, and invitations to networking and social events. They also have access to high-quality, nationally-provided resources including the Urban Excellence Framework Field Guide; UEF-aligned tools, artifacts, and resources; school-wide diagnostic tools and action planning frameworks; online access to key Foundations curriculum and course materials; the EPIC Knowledge System; and invitations to periodic national professional development events.

IRS990/Description0Residency ProgramThe core of the New Leaders aspiring principal program is a year-long, full-time, paid residency in an urban public school where the program participant works alongside a mentor principal. Simultaneously, program participants receive on-going training from New Leaders through a summer institute and regular seminars and training sessions throughout the school year. Program participants undergo an intensive recruitment and admissions process in order to be accepted. The ultimate goal of the Residency is to prepare program participants to become highly-effective principals or assistant principals in urban public schools that promote high expectations for and deliver high levels of student achievement and that equip every student with the academic and personal skills needed to graduate from high school ready for success in college, careers, and citizenship. Through this program, New Leaders delivered rigorous curriculum, training, and support experiences to 90 program participants in twelve program cities in order to give the participants the skills necessary to become outstanding urban public school leaders.
