On june 30, 2020, the organization filed articles of amendment with the commonwealth of massachusetts secretary of state's office. The articles of amendment were filed to amend article 2 of the original articles of incorporation to now read: this corporation is organized exclusively to carry out the charitable and educational purposes of shinnyo-en, u.s.a, the supported organization, and to carry out charitable activities on behalf of shinnyo-en, u.s.a., within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code or such other provision of state or federal laws as may from time to time be applicable, and which help to further the public well-being, by, among other things, distributing grants to organizations that work to improve health and healthcare for children and other individuals, families, and communities in africa, latin america, and the caribbean. Notwithstanding any other provision of these articles of organization, this corporation shall not, except to an insubstantial degree, engage in any activities or exercise any powers that are not in furtherance of the purposes of this corporation, and this corporation shall not carry on any other activities not permitted to be carried on (a) by a corporation exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, or the corresponding provision of any future federal tax code, or (b) by a corporation, contributions to which are deductible under section 170(c)(2) of the internal revenue code or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code. The corporation is not organized for the private gain of any person.
