College behind bars college behind bars defines partakers, inc. It is the umbrella program that serves inmates in five massachusetts state prisons, supporting them through education and mentoring while they are incarcerated. The program works to assist inmates in the following ways: supporting and sponsoring those who are in one of the three facilities in which the boston university(bu) prison education program is offered by providing academic mentoring for those who are accepted into the bu program as they matriculate toward a baccalaureate degree; mentoring inmates who have less time remaining in their sentences that are enrolled in the partakers' correspondence course program. These inmates take as many as three courses prior to completing their sentences, the goal being to build self-confidence and the motivation to continue to enroll in college courses after they are released. Providing proctors to any inmate in the state system enrolled in our correspondence or distance course program requiring proctored exams. In the bu-related program, as well as the correspondence course program, each inmate is paired with a team of 4 - 6 mentors who visit and correspond regularly. The relationship is built on mutual trust. Expectations are clearly defined in a "covenant" that is signed by the inmate and each mentor on the team. First and foremost, relationships are framed by the mutual goal of academic success and the investment that the inmate and mentors make toward that end.
