Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

For over 20 years the organization has developed and implemented transformative programming to teach young people critical peacemaking skills in order to reduce bullying, develop leadership, and engage young people in playing a vital role in making their schools and communities safer and more just places. The organization's curriculum for pre-k through 8th grade teaches young people the essential skills of peacemaking. Lessons encompass two areas of learning: peacemaking skills lessons address the social-emotional skills of cooperation, communication, conflict resolution, and empathy through cooperative games and activities; and peacemaker project lessons impart core skills for civic engagement by guiding young people in designing a service learning project to address a pressing community need. Through the organization, students become conscious of how they communicate with peers and adults, and learn to interact in a way that is culturally respectful and empathic. Students also learn to be assertive - standing up for one another and including others, rather than forming cliques or gangs. To promote widespread access to the curriculum and tools, the organization uses the digital activity center, an online platform that provides our signature materials in a cost-free and easy-to-download digital format. Educators, parents, counselors and administrators nationwide (and globally) can access this resource to spread peace education in schools, communities and homes. With the digital activity center new audiences are engaging - including private, public and charter schools, afterschool programs and youth organizations - to implement peacemaking into their programs. To scale the idea of youth peacemaking, the organization holds an annual campaign to inspire young people to lead community change. The organization's prize, open to youth ages 8-22 in the united states, is a national search for young people who have made important contributions to their schools and communities and served as role-models for others. The organization is investing in the long-term capability of winners to be national peace leaders by awarding winners a $25,000 fellowship over two years. The fellowship includes in-person convenings, individualized coaching, networking, and mentoring. The prize is also designed to share the incredible stories of these applicants, shift the national dialog about youth, and bring together young peacemakers. Through the prize, hundreds of incredible peacemaking stories have been captured and shared, inspiring many young people and bringing them together around peacemaking. With bullying and youth violence even more prevalent in the news, and with social-emotional learning and civic engagement being highlighted by scientific studies that show these skills promote life-long success, the organization is a leader in an emerging youth peacemaking movement.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Gaap prescribes a recognition threshold and measurement attribute for financial statement recognition and measurement of a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. For those benefits to be recognized, a tax position must be more-likely-than-not to be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. For the year ended june 30, 2015, the organization has determined that it has not taken any tax positions which would result in an uncertainty requiring recognition in the accompanying financial statements.

THE PRIZE HAS INTRODUCED YOUTH PEACEMAKING AS A POWERFUL CONCEPT TO MILLIONS OF AMERICANS, ENGAGING THEM AS NOMINEES, NOMINATORS, AND EDUCATORS. BY THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IN APRIL, WE RECEIVED 475 APPLICATIONS FROM 46 STATES, WASHINGTON D.C. AND PUERTO RICO. APPLICANTS WERE VETTED BASED ON A RUBRIC THAT INCORPORATED OUR THREE C'S TO DEFINE YOUTH PEACEMAKING: COURAGE (TAKING PERSONAL RISKS TO HELP OTHERS); COMPASSION (CROSSING DIVIDES TO UNDERSTAND OTHER PEOPLE'S PERSPECTIVES AND NEEDS); AND COLLABORATIVE CHANGE (MOBILIZING OTHERS TO CREATE LASTING, POSITIVE CHANGE). THE ORGANIZATION STAFF AND A SELECT GROUP OF EDUCATION, CIVIC, AND BUSINESS LEADERS, CALLED OUR PRIZE SCREENING COMMITTEE, SCREENED APPLICATIONS AND CONDUCTED THE INITIAL VETTING AND SELECTING. A DISTINGUISHED FELLOWSHIP INTERVIEW COMMITTEE COMPRISED OF HIGH-PROFILE LEADERS INTERVIEWED PROPOSED WINNERS TO ENDORSE THE SLATE FOR THE ORGANIZATION NATIONAL BOARD APPROVAL. THROUGH THIS PROCESS, WE WERE ABLE TO NARROW OUR 475 APPLICATIONS TO 85 SEMI-FINALISTS, 25 FINALISTS, AND 5 WINNERS WHO EACH RECEIVE A $25,000 TWO-YEAR FELLOWSHIP THAT INCLUDES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND MENTORSHIP.
