Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Macrils primary purpose since inception has been to assist adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live independently. We endeavor to provide support to such adults and their families and caregivers so that each adult who is intellectually or developmentally challenged may experience independent living, expand his or her horizons, and have the opportunity to reach his/her full potential. We assist with implementing residential programs that are set up as condominiums with full-time staffing that permit groups of disabled adults to function as independently as possible in a cooperative living situation. We have supported, and continue to support, parents and guardians of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in starting more than thirteen private group homes in the New England area based on this concept. IRS990EZ/PrimaryExemptPurpose0Our main goal since inception has been to assist high functioning but socially and mentally impaired and developmentally disabled adults to live independently. We implement or assist in the implementation of residential programs that approximate, as closely as possible, cooperatively-owned living situations. We have worked with and supported parents and guardians who have implemented over ten private cooperative group homes in the New England area, and we continue to support other groups who are in the process or are considering starting new cooperative homes. We have funded programs and research targeted to such developmentally disabled adults such as providing seminars and other guidance to their parents and guardians to provide information and assistance with the legal, financial, psychological and social aspects of living independently so that these adults are able to reach their full potential and develop a sense of self worth.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom0In 2012, MACRIL, Inc. covered the expenses of Specialized Housing Inc. in renting a van and transporting developmentally disabled adults to an annual conference program in Sturbridge or Worcester MA each fall run by another charitable organization that focuses on supporting such adults, Massachusetts Advocates Standing Strong (M.A.S.S.). M.A.S.S.is a statewide self-advocacy organization founded by individuals with cognitive and developmental challenges. Payment of expenses is made after the conference once documented evidence is submitted. The 2011 conference took place October 2011 and the expenses of slightly over $300 were reimbursed in 2012.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom1In 2012, MACRIL, Inc. covered the printing of additional Passport to Independence: A Manual for Families after the manual was updated in 2010 by a Boston based attorney and financial planners on a pro bono basis. The manual provides basic information on maximizing opportunities for the independence and growth of a special needs or developmentally disabled adult family member who needs support to flourish in the community. The booklet is offered at seminars open to the public that deal with the challenges of independent living for developmentally disabled adults and young adults. The fee for the booklet is $20 and the proceeds are used for Macril charitable activities.
