Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our mission is to connect people to the land to build community and inspire lifelong stewardship. Land's sake combines ecologically-sound land management practices with hands-on environmental education to model how public open space can be used and enjoyed by the community. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, land's sake, inc. Runs a public farm, hosts educational programming for all ages, maintains the town forest for recreational and production uses, and cares for both public conservation and private land. Our efforts are centered on three themes:environmental education, sustainable land management and open space preservation and community-building and caretaking. Bringing people onto the land as visitors to our farm, as volunteers or youth workers, and through our active educational programs, land's sake, inc. Directly connects people to their local ecology. Our work uncovers the intrinsic value of the land around us and the importance of treating the land with respect.

A working model of practical land stewardship and natural resources conservation which provides programs to the community on sustainable land management.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

There are two classes of members: members and directors. Membership in this corporation is open to any person who has paid the annual membership dues.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

Directors are elected annually by the members.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7B

Each member may attend all regular and special meetings of the membership in person or be represented thereat by proxy. The annual meeting of the membership 1)elects the board of directors; and president, vice president, secretary and treasurer 2)amends the by-laws if special notice is given and 3) attends to such other business as may properly come before the meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The form 990 is reviewed and approved by the finance committee before it is filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Our informal coi policy is to be sure that new and continuing board members have no business interests related to land's sake (i.e., are not paid by land's sake for any services or products). Board members that choose to run for town positions are asked to leave the board. Six of the eleven board members are retired/not working. No board member is an immediate neighbor to the property. Land's sake's adopted a formal coi policy which was adopted in february 2017.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

Land's sake, inc. Compared salary rates for comparative job postings on public job sites and nonprofit employment boards. The organization also looked at salaries of nearby farms and their executive directors, both through email, from online forms and verbal requests.
