Mission and Program Overview

Mission

SEE 990, PART I, LINE 1.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Educationat the core of our pathways to success, education programs address the needs of latino students in boston public schools, who bear the burden of a school system that has historically failed to adequately serve its diverse student population. The achievement gap, represented by low educational achievement among latino students in boston, has dire, long-term consequences on economic, social and emotional wellbeing. Our solution is a blend of three closely aligned educational programs designed to boost student achievement, build 21st century skills, engage parents, and prepare every student for success in college or employment education programs which support youth development from grade 6 through a student's first years of college or employment. All programs integrate case management and family engagement, as we build a bridge between families, schools, and community. Program participants also build long-term relationships with staff and mentors from our partner colleges and universities throughout their participation in the programs.
Activity 3
Latino arts and culturesociedad latina enriches the quality of life for latino youth and families by providing them with opportunities to explore the arts and celebrate the cultures of their origin. Arts programming provides youth with a rare opportunity to self-express, articulate frustrations and fears, and dream of alternatives in a society that discounts youth input and leaves many young people of color at a disadvantage. Participation in arts activities builds academic achievement, creativity, fluency, and originality in thinking, while increasing self-efficacy and awareness. The arts provide outlets for youth to try new methods of interaction in a safe space, as they work to buck trends of poverty, illness, and lack of opportunity in our community.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0LATINO ARTS AND CULTURESOCIEDAD LATINA ENRICHES THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR LATINO YOUTH AND FAMILIES BY PROVIDING THEM WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE THE ARTS AND CELEBRATE THE CULTURES OF THEIR ORIGIN.

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0FOUNDED IN 1968, SOCIEDAD LATINA WORKS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUTH AND FAMILIES TO CREATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF LATINO LEADERS WHO ARE CONFIDENT, COMPETENT, AND SELF-SUSTAINING. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS MISSION, SOCIEDAD LATINA HAS DEVELOPED A MULTI-SERVICE DELIVERY MODEL CALLED THE PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS, WHICH ENGAGES YOUTH OVER THE LONG-TERM (AGES 8-21) IN MULTI-DISCIPLINARY PROGRAMMING TO BUILD SKILLS IN FOUR AREAS, EDUCATION, WORKFORCE READINESS, CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, AND ARTS & CULTURE. THESE FOUR CONTENT AREAS ARE INFUSED INTO EACH PROGRAM. SOCIEDAD LATINA IMPLEMENTS AN ASSET-BASED APPROACH TO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE TO DEVELOP POSITIVE CULTURAL IDENTITIES WHICH SERVE AS PROTECTIVE FACTORS, PROMOTE RESILIENCY, AND CONTINUE LATINO CULTURAL TRADITIONS IN OUR COMMUNITY. SOCIEDAD LATINA'S SUCCESS RELIES ON DEEP PARTNERSHIPS WITH FAMILIES WHO ENGAGE WITH THE ORGANIZATION THROUGH EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, ARTS, AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENTSOCIEDAD LATINA'S WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS PROVIDE INTENSIVE SKILLS TRAINING, CAREER EXPLORATION, AND JOB READINESS OPPORTUNITIES TO LATINO YOUTH, EMPOWERING THEM TO OVERCOME DESTRUCTIVE CYCLES OF POVERTY AND EXPERIENCE FUTURE SUCCESS IN THE WORKFORCE. PAID INTERNSHIPS IN THREE FIELDS FOR YOUTH AGES 14-21 PROVIDE MEANINGFUL, HANDS ON WORK EXPERIENCES, WHILE WEEKLY WORKSHOPS, CAREER PANELS, AND JOB SHADOWS PROVIDE IN-DEPTH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT TRAINING AND CAREER EXPLORATION FOR YOUTH. IN 2006, LATINOS MADE UP 13.7% OF THE U.S. WORKFORCE, A PERCENTAGE THAT IS EXPECTED TO GROW RAPIDLY IN THE NEXT DECADE AS 16 MILLION LATINO CHILDREN GROW INTO TOMORROW'S WORKERS. HISTORICALLY, LATINOS HAVE BEEN OVERREPRESENTED IN LOW-EARNING AND OFTEN HAZARDOUS INDUSTRIES, SUCH AS FARMING, FISHING, FORESTRY, CONSTRUCTION, CLEANING AND FOOD SERVICE. THESE JOBS REFLECT LACK OF OPPORTUNITY RESULTING IN LOW LEVELS OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING AMONG LATINOS. CAREER SUCCESS IS NOT EASY FOR YOUNG LATINOS, WHO OFTEN FACE MULTIPLE BARRIERS TO SUCCESS INCLUDING LOW-QUALITY SCHOOLS, FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES, AND LANGUAGE BARRIERS. SOCIEDAD LATINA HAS FORGED CROSS-SECTOR PARTNERSHIPS WITH A BROAD NETWORK OF EMPLOYERS IN OUR COMMUNITY, INCLUDING EIGHT HOSPITALS IN THE WORLD-REKNOWNED LONGWOOD MEDICAL AREA. YOUTH BEGIN WORKFORCE READINESS TRAINING AS EARLY AS GRADE 6 AND CAN APPLY FOR PAID INTERNSHIPS IN GRADE 9. HEALTH CAREERS FOR YOUTHYOUTH LEADERS INTERN AT ONE OF EIGHT HOSPITALS IN THE LONGWOOD MEDICAL AREA, INCLUDING BETH ISRAEL DEACONESS MEDICAL CENTER, BRIGHAM AND WOMEN'S HOSPITAL, CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, DANA-FARBER CANCER INSTITUTE, JOSLIN CENTER FOR DIABETES, NEW ENGLAND BAPTIST HOSPITAL, AND WHITTIER STREET HEALTH CENTER. YOUTH LEADERS ALSO LEAD PROJECTS TO ADDRESS HEALTH INEQUITIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THESE HOSPITAL PARTNERS.

IRS990/Description0CIVIC ENGAGEMENTCIVIC ENGAGEMENT IS INFUSED IN ALL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMING AT SOCIEDAD LATINA, AS WE TRAIN ALL YOUTH TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR COMMUNITIES. YOUTH LEARN THE IMPORTANCE OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, AND RECEIVE THE TOOLS AND SPACE THEY NEED TO BE ACTIVE CITIZENS WHILE AT SOCIEDAD LATINA. COMMUNITY ORGANIZING INITIATIVES ENGAGE YOUTH AND ADULTS IN THIS WORK AND ADDRESS ISSUES AFFECTING OUR COMMUNITY, INCLUDING EDUCATION, CULTURE, HEALTH INEQUITIES, INSTITUTIONAL EXPANSION, AND QUALITY OF LIFE. MORE THAN 60,000 YOUNG PEOPLE IN MASSACHUSETTS ARE DISCONNECTED FROM EDUCATION, ADULTS, EMPLOYMENT, AND COMMUNITY, WITH THE LOCUS OF DISCONNECTION IN THE STATE'S CITIES, AMONG MINORITY YOUTH. DISCONNECTION RESULTS IN LOSS OF LIFETIME EARNINGS FOR INDIVIDUAL YOUTH, IMPOSES ECONOMIC COSTS ON SOCIETY, AND WEAKENS DEMOCRACY. THESE SERIOUS, LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES FOR INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES CAN BE AVOIDED BY ENGAGING YOUTH, CONNECTING THEM TO THEIR COMMUNITIES, AND EMPOWERING THEM TO BE LIFELONG ACTIVE CITIZENS.
