Healthy living - the west suburban ymca is committed to improving america's health and well-being, community by community. We bring families closer together, encourage good health and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result people in our community are receiving the support, guidance and resources they need to achieve greater health in spirit, mind and body. In addition, we offer specialized programs for cancer survivors, those with disabilities and older adults. This is particularly important as our nation struggles with chronic disease and obesity, families wrestle with work/life balance and individuals search for personal fulfillment. Our programs are accessible, affordable and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities and income levels.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4C Program Service Accomplishments

Social responsibility - our ymca believes in giving back and supporting our neighbors. We have been listening and responding to our community's most critical social needs for more than 140 years. Ymca programs, such as subsidized housing, community events, free services and membership help the community bridge gaps and overcome obstacles. In 2016, we engaged 13,960 ymca members, program participants, event participants and volunteers in activities that strengthen our community and pave the way for future generations to thrive.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part V, Line 4

The endowment funds are for the use of the organization for its operations and programs.

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2

The organization follows the FASB ASC 740, "Income Taxes", which clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes by prescribing the recognition threshold a tax position is required to meet before being recognized in the consolidated financial statements. The organization recognizes a tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities. Management evaluated the organization's tax positions and concluded that the organization has no material uncertainties in income taxes. With few exceptions, the organization is no longer subject to income tax examinations by the US Federal, State or Local tax authorities for the years before 2013.

IRS990/Desc0Youth Development - Our YMCA is committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen. We believe all kids have great potential and deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That's why we help young people cultivate the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and education achievement. Our YMCA programs, such as child care, preschool, youth sports, day care and overnight camps, offer a range of experiences that enrich social-emotional, cognitive and physical growth. Expenses include subsidies and direct financial assistance that make participation possible for 21% percent of the young people we engage.
