Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Connecting People to Peace through Service - Service For Peace is an independent nonprofit organization providing service and learning opportunities through community projects which promote transformational and sustainable personal and community development around the world. We bring together people and partners of diverse faiths, ethnicities, nationalities, generations, and cultures to address profound social needs by discovering commonality and genuine appreciation for differences - all through service. We believe that peace begins with the inner peace fostered by service to others and that active cooperation provides the foundation and the real hope for peace.

We provides meaningful community-based service learning opportunities for youth (ages 14-25), in order to promote civic knowledge and engagement.

IRS990/Desc0INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAMSDuring the period of January through March 2017, the International Volunteer Programs (IVPs) of Service For Peace were very active during the winter and spring breaks of US universities. SFP hosted four groups from three different universities: one from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, one from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA, and two from New York University. All of the programs involved returning partners that have been working with SFP for several years. The location for these volunteers was at SFP-DR's Community of Peace of El Cidral and at the Robert Reid Cabral "El Angelita" Children's Hospital in Santo Domingo between January and March 2017. Of those that served in El Cidral, two groups focused on ongoing construction of levees designed to protect community homes, schools, and property from devastating seasonal flooding. Another group focused on repairing damages to the primary school exterior, including repairing the basketball court and laying new sidewalks. The group that served in El Angelita Children's Hospital in Santo Domingo worked with support staff to provide needed assistance in several areas. This group was from the American Medical Students Association at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Georgia Tech's AMSA has been sending a delegation of volunteers to serve in this hospital through SFP for five years, and every year is different. As medical students, these volunteers are able to spend time with pediatricians, phlebotomists, and other physicians and clinical staff and learn about medical practice, common conditions, and common procedures. In exchange, volunteers provide valuable service such as heavy lifting in the pharmaceutical supply under the direction of clinical staff, creating gauze bundles used in the emergency room, and even providing companionship to cancer patients and other pediatric patients whose family cannot be with them or who have no family. The GT-AMSA group also spends one day visiting El Cidral every year in order to learn about the valuable work that SFP-DR does there year round.
