Major Activities

Activity 2
International Programs:In 2013, SFP organized eight international volunteer programs (IVPs) involving US universities. The clients included New York University, University of California at San Diego, Appalachian State University and Georgia Tech, University of Louisville, Auburn University, Georgia Southern University, Rice University. In each of the host nations, SFP staff members are involved in ongoing community based development programs in communities that SFP has designated as Communities of Peace. The Communities of Peace are those communities in which SFP has an ongoing presence dating back five or more years. All IVP programs are based in the Communities of Peace and are part of the ongoing development plan for that community. For example, this year's IVP programs in El Quimal, Guatemala focused on building three new schoolrooms. In La Represa/El Cidral, Dominican Republic, there were three areas of focus: building new schoolrooms (in partnership with the Ministry of Education; building a library; and continuing levee construction to prevent seasonal flooding from the nearby river. All IVP volunteers in the DR also spend a day working with the Empowered Women's Cocoa Cooperative which is going from strength to strength and is credited with reducing unemployment by 5% in La Repressa.DEVELOPING PARTNERSHIPSIn 2013, SFP was able to significantly expand its reach by partnering with other development organizations.Alllights VillageSFP's growing relationship with Alllights Village (ALV) is proving to be mutually beneficial. The access to solar lanterns and street lights offers a very appealing and effective addition to SFP's community based development programs and SFP's connections are providing a strong foundation for ALV pilot projects around the world. The SFP-ALV partnership is proving to be particularly fruitful in Kenya, Philippines and the Dominican Republic. Dr.Charles Phillips, CEO of SFP, recently visited Abuja, Nigeria and ALV/SFP is now planning to launch a pilot program there. According to a report by Nigeria's Infrastructural Concession Regulatory Commission, 60 percent of Nigeria's population have no access to electricity. Accordingly, over 80 million Nigerians are using either kerosene based-lanterns or candles. And less than 10 % of these currently have access to solar lantern or alternatives. The Renewable Energy Master Plan of the Energy Commission of Nigeria advocates for pilot renewable energy projects, particularly solar energy initiatives. This is why Alllights Village is currently exploring the creation of a pilot program next year. The ALV/SFP program is a comprehensive approach to community development with solar lanterns as a key component. ALV works with communities to leverage those opportunities and to fully realize the potential improvements in health, education, finance, and security. Cookstove ProjectIn 2013, SFP also assisted with the promotion and implementation of the Global Peace Foundation's cook stove project, particularly in Africa. This project of Global Peace Women involves teaching women how to make their own clay stoves from local materials. This simple, inexpensive practice saves lives; in sub Saharan Africa, indoor air pollution from open fires is the number one cause of death for children under five. For adults, it is the third largest cause of death after malaria and AIDS. The highest rates of exposure to indoor air pollution fall on women and young children, because they spend the most time in the home around the open fire. We help women to make their own clay stoves using a method that is simple and affordable and can be easily taught to others. The stoves use less wood and therefore reduce the daily labor for women and children while also reducing the impact on the environment. The clay cook stove creates airtight cooking chambers that prevent smoke from escaping around cooking pots. A tin chimney provides an exhaust channel for these dangerous fumes that would otherwise f

This year, the program involved more than 30 communities and 15 states. In all, there were 280 different projects involving 19,000 volunteers who completed 61,206 volunteer hours.
