“Focus: hope revitalization (fhr) works hand in hand with government, community organizations and local residents to revitalize the hope village neighborhood surrounding focus: hope's main campus. Fhr focuses its efforts on improving the quality of life in the hope village neighborhood through three major programmatic areas: sustainable, affordable housing and neighborhood cleanup: fhr rehabilitates houses to create sustainable, affordable housing. It also acquires and assembles property for housing redevelopment, including property for the village of oakman manor, a 55-unit senior housing development and oakman place, a 24-unit low income housing development. It also collaborates with other organizations on blight removal, boarding up vacant homes, cleaning up alleys and reclaiming and cleaning up brownfields sites. This year, fhr completed renovation of an abandoned, fire-damaged two family flat that it has renovated to the highest standards of energy efficiency - the la salle eco-demonstration home. It also collaborated with life remodeled and access for all to clean alleys throughout the hope village. Fresh and local food systems and neighborhood economic development: fhr assists with the development of local food systems, including community gardens and also hosts a seasonal weekly farmers market (with food assistance) to provide a local source of fresh vegetables and fruits. This year, it worked to establish four community gardens, installed two rain gardens, and hosted many vendors at its farmers market. It also collaborated with prosperus to train several cohorts of local small businesses in business planning and growth. Placemaking and arts and cultural development: fhr has had a long track record of placemaking, including creation of the cool cities park on a former brownfields site, painting murals and sponsoring neighborhood art installations. It also sponsors arts and cultural performances and festivals. This year for the second year it sponsored the focus: on detroit photography festival, bringing together high-quality photography exhibitions and a beautiful light show, all focused on uplifting detroit and the residents of the hope village. This year it also hosted numerous cultural presentations, including a drum circle, jazz performances, an african fashion show and more. In addition, fhr brings the community together through regular town halls and community meetings, and also lifts up local resident projects such as the citizenship for health project. Because fhr was a supporting organization this year, its financial activities (both revenue and expense) were reported on focus: hope's books.”
