The Craddock Center serves people of Southern Appalachia, especially preschool children. Our primary program provides storytelling and music to 1240 pre-K and Head Start children, seeking to enhance school readiness and engagement.

IRS990/Desc0The Children's Enrichment Program (CEP) serves approximately 1,300 children in nine counties across three states. Biweekly or greater music and movement and storytelling lessons are provided completely free of charge to children in head start and pre-k classrooms. This arts enrichement program is vitally important to developing critical thinking skills, school engagement, language development, and pre-emergent literacy skills. Of teachers surveyed, 85% reported an increase in singing and/or use of songs in play, and 71% reported their students had an increased listening span. A majority of teachers reported their students used vocabulary derived from the stories told via CEP in play and writing (65%), in retelling the stories (75%), and in verbalizing their pleasure from hearing the story (79%).

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Camp Craddock is a summer program designed to deliver enrichement and learning activities, as well as reading opportunities to children of low income families in order to shrink or remove the summer achievement gap. Camp Craddock also involves the delivery of and programming around meals from Seamless Summer (a USDA-sponsored summer meal program). All services are provided during one-week camps brought to children's neighborhoods. Approximately 213 children in two counties were served during the fiscal year. Volunteers served as camp counselors, lodging at the Craddock Center. A suggested donation of $85/week per volunteer to cover the cost of lodging was received. No individual or group was turned away if they chose not to provide this donation.

The Story Express gave away more than 8,000 books - free of charge. The Story Express also visited festivals, events, open houses, was used for Camp Craddock, literacy nights, and church functions to reach the total handout of 8,000 books.
