| The "Making Work Visible" Contest is jointly sponsored with the City University of New York, and awards cash prizes for fiction, non-fiction, poetry and visual art that shows thoughtful, original work on subjects relevant to work, to working people, and to the labor movement. Topics might include, but are not limited to: economic and social problems; issues of immigration; conflicts based on race, class, and ethnic identity; environmental concerns; child labor; women in the labor force; economic justice; globalization and international labor markets; organizing campaigns; crime and corruption; anti-labor campaigns; cultural and artistic visions; ideals and ideologies. The goal of the contest is to expand student thinking about the history of work, and to provide opportunities to make links between individual lived experience and larger social issues. The Lemlich Awards, hosted by the Puffin Gallery for Social Activism at the Museum of the City of New York, honor women who have been working for the larger good their entire lives, in the tradition of those who sparked so many reforms in the aftermath of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in 1911. The importance of honoring these women is matched only by the value of transmitting their stories to younger generations, which we do via interns who work on the project, an event, and a series of projects to engage youth in interviewing and "shadowing" the honorees.Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives - The first exhibit on the LaborArts site 20 years ago featured oral history and photos from this book - a pictorial history of working people in New York City. . The new 2020 paperback edition inspired plans for a series of events and exhibits in 2020 -- all of them modified or postponed due to the pandemic. An online exhibit at the New York City Archives and an event jointly sponsored by the Archives and LaborArts and the Robert F. Wagner LaborArchives/Tamiment Library at NYU can both be found via the Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives page on LaborArts, and will be followed by other events and exhibits in 2021. | $0 | $10,610 |
| We created an exhibit featuring the 2020 Lemlich Honorees, an exhibit featuring the 2020 CUNY contest winners, and the Connecting Activists exhibit, featuring an ongoing series of interviews by young (high school and college) activists with elder activists, many of them Lemlich honorees. We created a page featuring the book Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives, and events associated with the publication of the spring 2020 paperback edition. We are working on transferring the entire website from its original platform (it was built in 2000 in ColdFusion) to a more modern and more easily modified platform. The process has turned out to be considerably more labor intensive than predicted, and will continue on through 2021 | $0 | $3,840 |
