FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The kennebec land trust works cooperatively with landowners and communities to conserve the forests, shorelands, fields, and wildlife that define central maine. Klt protects land permanently, offers opportunities for people to learn about and enjoy the natural world, and works with partners to support sustainable forestry and farming. Established in 1988, klt works in 21 communities to protect 5648 acres on 65 properties through land donations, purchases, and conservation easements. Klt organizes hikes, paddles, and an annual march lecture (lyceum) series, and outdoor photography and painting workshops that encourage residents and visitors to learn about and enjoy kennebec county's natural landscape. One hundred dedicated volunteers, including 66 land stewards, commit over 2,161 hours of time annually to support klt's stewardship, education, administration, and governance. Klt has constructed 43 miles of trails on klt land. Klt has had 28 interns from 18 colleges and universities since 2005, helping to develop the next generation of conservation leadership. Klt is also the founding member, with the maine forest service (mfs), of kennebec woodland partnership (kwp), a regional conservation initiative with thirteen governmental and non-governmental organizations that promotes private and public woodland stewardship and conservation. In 2013, kennebec land trust, kwp and three statewide partners: coastal enterprises inc, maine coast heritage trust, and growsmart maine, launched local wood works (lww). The nature conservancy and the northern forest center signed on as partners in 2015. The shared mission of the local wood works partners is to advance forest-based local economies and support the long-term conservation and sustainability of maine's woodlands. Lww partners are committed to: sustainable forestry; land stewardship; strong and resilient local economies; conservation of both working woodlands and ecological reserves; reduced energy consumption and transportation costs based on local products; and, providing support to landowners, loggers, processors, manufacturers, and consumers. On november 14, 2014, lww partners hosted maine's first local wood works conference in augusta. One hundred and twenty people from across the northeast gathered to engage, discuss, and learn about local wood economies. The conference featured success stories from businesses that thrive from maine's forests in the logging, processing, fuel, home building, and fine wood working industries; and group discussions with business leaders, policy makers, landowners, and researchers on how best to improve and grow the local wood economy. In 2016, lww partners met with the following stakeholders to identify viable collaborative pathways for an enhanced local wood economy in maine: portland-architects and builders bethel-manufacturing and processing farmington-landowners, foresters and loggers augusta-policy experts and advocates augusta-agriculture and local food experts during the fall and winter of 2016-2017, lww partners continued to work together to advance forest-based local economies and support the long-term conservation and sustainability of maine's woodlands. Our white paper: building maine's local wood economy, together with conservation: https://www.tklt.org/local-wood-works-2017-white-paper/, was published and widely distributed in september, 2016. This paper is a road map for future collaboration. At this time the partners are focused on initiatives with builders and architects.

Form 990

Klt received an estimated 43,998 of donated services and facilities which are reported in our reviewed financial statements. Donated services and facilities are as follows: stewardship baseline work (2923); legal services for land acquisitions (30875);general accounting and tax services (5200); and facilities space for annual meeting (5000).

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

One hundred dedicated volunteers, including interns and 66 land stewards, committed 2,161 hours of time this fiscal year to support klt's stewardship, education, administration and governance. Donated services and facilities are not included here, but are recorded on the organization's reviewed financial statements. Donated use of a facility for the annual meeting had an estimated fair market value of 5,000 and donated services requiring specialized skills for printing, professional design work, professional consulting, legal services and accounting services had an estimated value of 38,998. The organization benefits from personal services provided by a substantial number of people for which a donated value cannot be calculated.

Your woodland: a resource guide for kennebec county landowners, published in february 2012; between person and place: conservation histories from the kennebec land trust, published in 2010, includes essays and photographs highlighting the stories behind klt's conservation lands; adventure, discover, explore: a family guide to klt properties, published in 2008, includes activities for children and parents. Programming includes: annual hikes, paddles, bird walks and outdoor photography and painting workshops; since 2009, over 1,400 central maine students, parents, and teachers have learned about sustainable forestry at the kennebec land trust's annual educational program at the 360-acre curtis homestead conservation area in leeds, me. 15th annual march lecture series - lyceum - celebrating history, arts and ecology programs; klt annual meeting celebration including hikes, paddles and cookout; annual stewardship workshop for our 66 volunteer stewards.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Plan, which will be updated in 2019, will continue to inform and guide klt's land acquisition and conservation easement priorities for the future. Klt is a lead partner and the fiscal agent for both the kennebec woodland partnership (kwp) and the local wood works initiative, two successful regional conservation initiatives focused on the long-term sustainability of kennebec county's woodlands and a landscape-level approach to conservation.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Eight-year process undertaken by klt designed to preserve forever, as open space, the wooded backdrop to the state's capitol. One hundred thirty six individuals, eight private and public foundations, and fifteen maine businesses and non-profits donated to the howard hill campaign. This permanently protected landmark is a unique natural, historic, and scenic forest of statewide significance. Howard hill's immediate proximity to the capitol complex further enhances its public values and accessibility. This highly visible landscape will provide many opportunities to profile the community benefits of land conservation and sustainable forestry. This conservation property also offers many opportunities for year-round recreation including hiking, picnicking, cross-country skiing, nature observation, and hunting. Klt's most recent fee and easement acquisitions are: the 342-acre rosmarin and saunders family forest in readfield; the 26-acre horseshoe island addition to the 72-acre cobbossee islands preserves in wintrop; the 17-acre rolling dam preserve in gardiner; and the 12-acre donohoe preserve conservation easement in gardiner. The extensive rosmarin and saunders family forest will be a demonstration site for sustainable forestry and will be managed to protect wildlife habitat and water quality, and for low impact outdoor recreation. The southern boundary of the property is close to klt's macdonald woods conservation area and the readfield town forest. This hilly, wooded property which has traditionally been used year round for hunting, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and hiking is now permanently protected and open to the public. The trust's newest parcel on horseshoe island, cobbossee lake, features 3,000 feet of undeveloped shoreline, valuable wetlands, and old-growth hardwoods, pines, and hemlocks. A proposed new trail will offer varied terrain and scenic views to hikers and will expand the current horseshoe island trail system. The 17-acre rolling dam brook preserve is adjacent to klt's 12-acre donohoe preserve conservation easement. Both properties protect wildlife habitat and valuable wetlands on rolling dam brook. The city of gardiner also owns a contiguous 53-acre wooded parcel. When combined, these properties create a contiguous 82-acres of open space.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 1, Part II, Line 9

Conservations easements purchased or donated are recorded as assets on the statement of assets, liabilities, and net assets-modified cash basis at the value of 1 each in order to keep track of the number of easements held by klt. All easements acquired by purchase are expensed as easement acquisitions in the statement of revenues, expenses and changes in net assets-modified cash basis. In addition, costs incurred in obtaining the easements are expensed. A nominal book value of 1 is assigned to each conservation easement due to the lack of foreseeable future cash flow benefits and an absence of a secondary easement market.

Schedule D, Page 2, Part V, Line 4

Earnings from the permanent endowment are included in temporarily restricted assets and can be used to support the mission of the organization.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0STEWARDSHIP - KLT STAFF AND BOARD MEMBERS OVERSEE THE MANAGEMENT OF KLT'S FEE LANDS, MONITOR CONSERVATION EASEMENTS AND WORK WITH 66 VOLUNTEER STEWARDS. KLT'S STEWARDS COLLECTIVELY VOLUNTEER OVER 860 HOURS EACH YEAR FOR TRAIL MAINTENANCE, MONITORING, AND PUBLIC ACCESS PROJECTS. CONSERVATION PARCELS THAT ARE ESPECIALLY LARGE IN ACREAGE, OR HAVE UNIQUE OR COMPLEX MANAGEMENT NEEDS, HAVE MORE THAN ONE VOLUNTEER STEWARD. KLT'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS DEVELOPED A STRATEGIC CONSERVATION PLAN THAT FOCUSES ON TEN PRIORITY CONSERVATION VALUES. KLT'S STRATEGIC CONSERVATION PLAN WAS DEVELOPED WITH GIS BASE NATURAL RESOURCE INFORMATION, AND WITH INFORMATION FROM COMMUNITY OPEN SPACE AND COMPREHENSIVE PLANS. THIS 2013 PLAN, WHICH WILL BE UPDATED IN 2019, WILL CONTINUE TO INFORM AND GUIDE KLT'S LAND ACQUISITION AND CONSERVATION EASEMENT PRIORITIES FOR THE FUTURE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0LAND PROTECTION - SINCE 1988, KLT HAS WORKED COOPERATIVELY WITH LANDOWNERS AND COMMUNITIES TO CONSERVE OUR REGION'S NATURAL ASSETS. KLT HAS CONSERVED 5,648 ACRES IN A SERVICE AREA THAT COVERS 412,000 ACRES AND 21 TOWNS PRIMARILY IN KENNEBEC COUNTY, BUT ALSO ANDROSCOGGIN AND FRANKLIN COUNTIES. KLT HOLDS CONSERVATION EASEMENTS ON, ACCEPTS GIFTS OF, AND PURCHASES SIGNIFICANT LANDS TO FURTHER THE MISSION OF THE ORGANIZATION. IN 2017, KLT TRANSFERRED THE 164-ACRE HOWARD HILL PROPERTY TO THE CITY OF AUGUSTA. THE CITY OF AUGUSTA GRANTED A CONSERVATION EASEMENT TO KLT THAT ENSURES THAT THE PROPERTY WILL BE CONSERVED IN PERPETUITY FOR THE BENEFIT OF MAINE'S PEOPLE AND WILDLIFE. THIS TRANSACTION SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED AN EIGHT-YEAR PROCESS UNDERTAKEN BY KLT DESIGNED TO PRESERVE FOREVER, AS OPEN SPACE, THE WOODED BACKDROP TO THE STATE'S CAPITOL.
