Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

The executive director and and director of administration review the accountant prepared form 990 for accuracy and then it is approved by the board before it is filed with the irs.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

All members of the board sign a board service commitment agreement which states, "to avoid conflicts of interest between my position as a board member and my personal life. If such a conflict does arise, i will declare that conflict before the board and refrain from voting on matters in which i have a conflict".

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

The board of directors does an annual performance review of the executive director. At hire, the salary was set comparable to other directors in maine who work at similar size agencies. Annual increases since that time have been consistent with the increase of all other staff in the agency.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Victims to get support and education with those who have had similar experiences.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Shelter services: our kennebec county shelter provides temporary emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and their children who have been forced to leave their homes because of partner violence or threats of violence; last year, 71 residents were helped with obtaining housing, tanf, food stamps, mainecare, housing assistance, employment and other resources residents needed in order to rebuild their lives. 100% of clients who request shelter receive assistance and/or a referral for appropriate sheltering. Menswork: menswork's mission is to help men acknowledge their abusive behaviors and beliefs, identify their use of violence and coercive control, and learn to use respectful behavior instead of abusive behavior. This certified batterer education program offers change opportunities for abusive men using the nationally recognized domestic abuse intervention project's duluth model (daip). The goal of the education program is to stop male violence and promote individual responsibility. Transitional housing: this program offers safe, secure and affordable longer term housing for victims and their children as they make the transition from living in an abusive home. Support is given as residents work toward individual goals to better prepare them for living independently such as continued education, work training, financial literacy, medical treatment, parenting skills and accessing other needed resources.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The project adopted the recognition requirements for uncertain income tax positions as required by generally accepted accounting principles, with no cumulative effect adjustment required. Income tax benefits are recognized for income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, only when it is determined that the income tax position will more-likely- than-not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities.it is the opinion of management that the organization had no uncertain positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the financial statements. The organization is subject to examinations by tax authorities for three years following the filing of the return.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0COMMUNITY EDUCATION: WE CANNOT END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ALONE. OUR COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THE DYNAMICS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE AND TO WORK WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT, COURTS, SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES AND INSTITUTIONS ABOUT HOW TO RESPOND TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE APPROPRIATELY. LAST YEAR WE TRAINED 1,544 ADULTS. OUR SCHOOL-BASED ABUSE PREVENTION PROGRAM OFFERS AGE APPROPRIATE PRESENTATIONS FOR STUDENTS IN PRE-SCHOOL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND ADULT EDUCATION.
