Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

The executive director and and director of administration review the accountant prepared form 990 for accuracy and then it is approved by the board before it is filed with the irs.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

All members of the board sign a board service commitment agreement which states, "to avoid conflicts of interest between my position as a board member and my personal life. If such a conflict does arise, i will declare that conflict before the board and refrain from voting on matters in which i have a conflict".

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

The board of directors does an annual performance review of the executive director. At hire, the salary was set comparable to other directors in maine who work at similar size agencies. Annual increases since that time have been consistent with the increase of all other staff in the agency.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Shelter services: provides temporary emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and their children; help residents obtain housing, tanf, food stamps, mainecare, housing assistance, employment and other resources residents may need in order to start over with their lives. 100% of clients who request help will receive assistance and/or a referral for appropriate sheltering. Menswork: this 48 week certified batterer's education program is designed to provide a pre- and post-sentencing alternative to men who are violent with the women & children in their lives. The mission is to help men acknowledge their abusive behaviors and beliefs, identify their use of violence and coercive control, and learn to use respectful behavior instead of abusive behavior. The goal of the education program is to stop male violence and promote individual responsibility. Transitional housing: this is a two year program which offers affordable housing and supports victims as they work towards personal goals while establishing new lives.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

The project adopted the recognition requirements for uncertain income tax positions as required by generally accepted accounting principles, with no cumulative effect adjustment required. Income tax benefits are recognized for income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, only when it is determined that the income tax position will more-likely- than-not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. It is the opinion of management that the project had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the financial statements.
