Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

A draft of the 990 is reviewed and approved by the business manager, then a final draft is provided to each member of the board for review prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All conflict of interest forms are updated during the bot annual meetings.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The headmaster's current compensation level was determined as part of the original hiring agreement completed in the first quarter of 2008. The bridgton academy board of trustees engaged the firm of educational directions, inc. Of portsmouth, ri as a consultant to our search process. A salary range for the position of headmaster was established through data and recommendations from educational directions, inc. As well as through feedback from the candidates on their current compensation levels. The hiring agreement, which included details on mr. Vigneau's compensation as headmaster was reviewed and approved by the full board of trustees. We compare our senior management salaries with their peer's salaries available from the independent school association of northern new england (the isanne group).

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The governing documents and conflict of interest statements are not made public. Financial information is made available to the public via our form 990.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

This process has not changed since the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 4:

The school owns what is called the spratt-meade museum, which is located in a seperate building on the school's campus. The museum features a collection of local and regional historical artifacts which are available to the school's students along with public viewings upon request. The museum supports the school mission of providing education to students.

PART V, LINE 4:

The purpose of this fund is to generate income to be used to provide annual scholarships, awards and prizes to students of the academy as well as to provide support for the general operations of the academy.

PART X, LINE 2:

The academy follows the provisions of fasb asc 740-10 accounting for uncertainty in income taxes. This guidance clarifies the criteria that an individual tax position must satisfy for some or all of the benefits of that position to be recognized in an entity's financial statements. It also prescribes a recognition threshold of more likely-than-not, and a measurement attribute for all tax positions taken or expected to be taken on a tax return,in order for those tax positions to be recognized in the financial statements. There was no cumulative effect on the academy's financial statements related to following these provisions, and no interest or penalties related to uncertain tax positions were accrued. The academy is currently open to audit under the statute of limitations by the internal revenue service and state taxing authorities for the years ended june 30, 2013 through 2016.
